Second Pavel Karavayev 790 and third Pawel Shalin 788. Unusual higher quality in men 1500 m than women. Yegor Nikolayev clocked 3:39.54 ahead of Dmitriy Nizelskiy 3:41.56 and Pavel Khvorostukhin 3:41.56. Women winner Yelena Korobkina achieved for Russian circumstances low key 4:10.28 beating Svetlana Podosyonova 4:10.47, Anna Shchagina 4:10.69 and world record holder Yelena Soboleva 4:11.02. European lead 2013 for 5000 m winner Olga Golovkina 15:36.08 over Yelena Nagovitsyna 15:36.65 and Natalya Gorchakova 15:38.98. Pole vault World junior champion 2010 Anton Ivakin (coached by Yevgeniy Trofimov in Volgograd) won the senior title with 565 overall PB. The award was presented to him by Yelena Isinbaeva. Three others cleared 555 (Burya, Gripich, Kucheryanu). Triple jump women final ended with sensational win for Irina Gumenyuk ahead of Viktoriya Dolgacheva (PB) both 14.41 (on count-back 14.33 and 14.07). Third Veronika Mosina 14.30 and qualification best Natalya Kutyakova was only 9th (13.62). Rinas Akhmadeyev won men 5000 m with 13:48.27. Relay wins for men of Tyumen ahead of Perm at 4×200m (both same time 1:25.38) and St. Peterburg in 4×800 m 7:22.13. On the women side Irkutsk at 4x200 m 1:34.55 and Moscow in 4×800 m 8:16.16 (5th fastest time ever).
Russian Team for Goteborg
MOSCOW (RUS): All-Russia Federation named preliminary squad for European Indoor Championships in Goteborg after the nationals. The only London Olympics medalist in the team is shot putter Yevgeniya Kolodko. Interestingly the only one event where no athlete is selected is women high jump. Third female pole vaulter will be decided between Anzhelika Sidorova and Lyudmila Yeryomina at the Russian U23 Championships in Volgograd next week. Powell first 100 m of the year in Australia
MELBOURNE (AUS): The fourth fastest man in history Jamaican Asafa Powell has been confirmed to run in the men’s 100m at the 2013 Qantas Melbourne IAAF World Challenge on Saturday 6 April. Set to launch his track season just days after competing at the Australia Post Stawell Gift, Powell boasts an outstanding list of accolades including an Olympic and Commonwealth title, four medals from the IAAF World Championships, seven Jamaican championship crowns and seven victories in the short sprint at the Samsung Diamond League since it commenced in 2010. Informs Athletics Australia. Powell has ran a time quicker than 10 seconds more than any other athlete (88 times). He hopes to be the first person ever to break the 10-second barrier in Melbourne when he races on Lakeside Stadium’s blue track this April.
Top distances planned for XL-Galan
STOCKHOLM (SWE): US Olympic 10 000 m medalist Galen Rupp will run the 3000 meters at Stockholm’s XL-Galan (IAAF Indoor Permit) on Thursday, Feb 21. He will stand against last week’s winners of Düsseldorf Caleb Ndiku (former Wolrd Junior Champ of 1500m) and of Gent, Albert Rop, both Kenyans. Also in the field fresh national record runner Hayle Ibrahimov of Azerbaijan, Paul Kipsiele Koech and French Bob Tahri. The arena record of the Ericsson Globe is 7:30.51 by legendary Kenenisa Bekele from 2007. Other new names revealed in the latest start list is great 400 m duel of two olympic medalists Luguelin Santos and Lalonde Gordon with in-shape European champion Pavel Maslak. The 800 m should see Mohamed Aman vs. Adam Kszczot vs. Timothy Kitum and Abubaker Kaki, a dream field. But there will be also a high quality 1000 m with Matt Centrowitz, Abdelaati Iguider, in-shape Ayanleh Suleiman, Marcin Lewandowski and Andrew Osagie. Two world leaders will clash in the 60 m hurdles (Craddock and Shabanov) with Cuban Orlando Ortega. Women distances are having special names in Genzebe Dibaba who will run her second indoor 3000 m of the career and very important for the host country Abeba Aregawi as Swedish (for first time) in 1500 m against World indoor champion 2010 Kalkidan Gezahegne of Ethiopia.
Millrose Highlights
NEW YORK (USA): Race Results Weekly writes that the Saturday’s 106th Millrose Games will give fans a rare opportunity to watch two high-quality 600-meter races, three laps of the Armory’s fast, banked, Mondo track. In both contests –one for men and one for women– the athletes could set national or world bests for the rarely run distance. One of the debutantes here is Nick Symmonds, five-time USA 800m champion. Saturday’s race will be his first in the Armory, his first indoor 600m race, and his only indoor race of this season. He said that he had three excellent weeks of base training in Mexico with Olympic silver medalist Leo Manzano, but had the flu for five days, which left him bed-ridden. Nonetheless, he’s focused on racing well against his key rival, Duane Solomon, who ran a national best 1:15.70 in Glasgow on 26 January. Solomon said last week that the world best of 1:15.12 by Germany’s Nico Motchebon (1999) was definitely a possibility. Alysia Montaño, fifth at last summer’s Olympic 800m, is the favorite in the women’s race. She doesn’t have an official 600m mark to her credit, but said that she’s run faster than the USA best of 1:26.56 set by Delisa Walton-Floyd 30 years ago several times in practice (outdoors). Like Montaño, the other competitors are half-milers, including 2012 World Indoor bronze medalist Erica Moore, and Neptune, N.J., high school sensation Ajee’ Wilson who just turned pro. Other highlights are olympic winners Brittney Reese in long jump and Jenn Suhr in pole vault and London silver winner Brigitta Barrett in high jump. Bernard Lagat runs 2 miles and in the historical Wanamaker Mile Matt Centrowitz against Lopez Lomong. Great duel is expected in men 60 m hurdles with world champion Jason Richardson, olympian Jeff Porter, decathlon world champion Trey Hardee and Jamaican record NCAA Champion Andrew Riley.
Defar for New Orleans HM
NEW ORLEANS (USA): It was already announced that Mo Farah will be running the Rock and Roll Half Marathon in New Orleans on February 24. Now another London olympic gold medalist is added into the field, Meseret Defar for the women race. In her Half-marathon debut in Philadelphia in 2010, Defar shattered what was then the US all-comers record, running the fastest time (67:45) ever run by a woman on American soil for the distance. Defar will be joined by two of the biggest superstars in US distance running – the fastest American woman ever to run a half-marathon Kara Goucher (66:57) and 2008 Olympic bronze medallist over 10,000m Shalane Flanagan. The training partners will look to use the flat New Orleans course as a spring board to the Bosto
n Marathon in April. Organizers are informing.
Shock from Pretoria
PRETORIA (RSA): Shocking news from Pretoria. Oscar Pistorius, the South African “Blade Runner”, has been charged with murder after his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead at his home in Pretoria, South Africa, media have reported. Writes Athletics Weekly. The precise circumstances are unclear, but police have confirmed to local media that a 30-year-old woman died at the scene after being shot in the head and arm. Early reports said Pistorius may have mistaken his girlfriend for an intruder, however, in a more recent police press conference, a spokeswoman dismissed those early reports and also revealed that police had been called to the athlete’s address in the past to deal with “allegations of a domestic nature”. Speaking earlier this morning, South African journalist Kalay Maistry told Sky News: “It is alleged that he thought his girlfriend, who’d come in to try to surprise him for Valentines Day, was an intruder. It’s alleged that he shot her at least twice in the arm and head.” Pistorius planned his first international races of the season in Australia. He remained in custody and should appeare before the court on Friday.

MOSCOW (RUS): Reigning long jump European indoor champion Darya Klishina will go to Goteborg to defend her title. 22-year-old Russian won national indoor trials landed with 680. “I have been competed this indoor season more than usually, started already from the middle of January. It was my own decision as I have huge desire to jump and to compete. But after National champs I’ll take a breake for deep preparation for Goteborg. No more performance before European Indoors,” said Klishina to rusathletics.com.
BIRMINGHAM (GBR): Reigning World Indoor Champion Mohamed Aman of Ethiopia is no longer in the Birmingham 800 m start list due to visa issues. On the other hand Dwain Chambers who missed the trials is supposed to run the 60 m along with Nesta Carter, Lerone Clarke, Mike Rodgers and Kim Collins all with sub 10 100 m personal bests. The sprinters must first qualify through 2 heats, the same for women 60 m and men 60 m Hurdles. The only sprint with straight final is women 60 m hurdles with Tiffany Porter as main name with Danielle Carruthers.
ADELAIDE (AUS): Seven Olympians, a Paralympic silver medallist and eight representatives from the 2012 IAAF World Junior Championships have been confirmed as entries for the Adelaide Track Classic this Saturday 16 February. The highlight arguably comes in the short sprints, with fast-paced Australian 4x100m relay record holders Josh Ross and Anthony Alozie set to join their fellow Australian Flame Tim Leathart and Melissa Breen in the men’s and women’s short sprints respectively. Informs Athletics Australia.
LONDON (GBR): A meeting featuring some of the stars from last year’s Paralympics will be the climax of a three-day event to celebrate the first anniversary of London 2012 at the Olympic Stadium, it was announced. Insidethegames informs that the Paralympic competition will follow two days of Samsung Diamond League athletics to make up the London Anniversary Games. The event will take place from 26 to 28 July, it was announced by UK Athletics.
NICOSIA (CYP): Triple jumper Nina Serbezova (31) is Cyprean triple jump record holder with 13.94 from last year as she officially became a Cypriot citizen a few days before this mark. IAAF’s is recognizing her performances with her new country from January 16, 2013 and consider her eligible from July 5, 2013. She is of Bulgarian origin.
MOSCOW (RUS): Reigning shot put silver Olympic medalist Yevgeniya Kolodko after winning at National indoor championships with 19.24 told to Russian media about her preparation to Goteborg. “I felt like amoeba not very long ago but all my season preparation went off without a hitch. Mekhissi will now spent some days in Monte Gordo, Portugal at a training camp before returning for European Indoor 3000 m in Goteborg. “My main rivals will be naturalized Kenyans running for Turkey and Spanish runners. But I know my responsibilities,” he was quoted by L´Équipe.
AUBIERE (FRA): Great 60 m duel could be expected at French National Championships this weekend. On Saturday Jimmy Vicaut and Christophe Lemaitre should meet in the 60 m final. Vicaut already clocked 6.53 this winter, Lemaitre is at 6.64 level. “Indoor is not my priority, that goes to summer, so Im not worried at all,” he said for L´Équipe. He also felt better in Val de Reuil at the 200 m with 20.91 what is only 0.08 behind his indoor PB 20.83 from 2010. “Im here more confident than at 60 m, I m a 200 m runner,” Lemaitre said. He plans also to run the 200 m at the championships on Sunday.
ROTTERDAM (NED) : Organizers of Rotterdam’s bid to host the Olympic youth Games of 2018 have said to be disappointed after not receiving enough votes to be among the top three contenders to host the youth Olympics. Still in the running are Glasgow, Buenos Aires and Medellin. The Games will be awarded by the IOC on July 4th.
AMSTERDAM (NED): Dutch hurdler Gregory Sedoc announced he will not compete at the Dutch national indoor championships due to a hamstring injury. Sedoc will pass the rest of the indoor season and prepare for the summer according to Nusport.
AMSTERDAM (NED): Dutch runner Abdi Nageeye (23) is currently at training camp for the outdoor season in Addis Ababa and told Dutch media he wants to prepare for this summer’s IAAF World championships in Moscow. He is hopeful to run the qualifying standard at 10 000 m in April in Stanford, California. Nageeye has confirmed he will pace over 30K at this year’s Amsterdam marathon and wants to debut in the marathon early 2014.
PARIS (FRA): French triple jumper Harold Correa told athle.com he can go further than the 16.83 he recorded at the German indoor meeting of Ludwigshafen last weekend. Correa, who discovered athletics at the age of 18, is hungry to break the 17m barrier at the French national indoor championships and the European indoor championships.
SEVILLA (ESP): The 29th edition of the Maraton de Sevilla on February 24 is going to be one of the most exciting marathon races in Europe early this season. Maraton de Sevilla is opening its door to the international runners community and has unveiled a new and absolutely flat race course in one of the most scenic venue possible, in the city centre of Sevilla, crossing through all the main monuments and historical streets and finishing at the same track of the Olympic Stadium that hosted the Athletics World Championship in 1999. One month ago the race was sold out: more than 7000 athletes registered. Top names in the start list are Eritreans Yonas Klife and Dagnaw Sharew, Ethiopian Teshome Gelana, Kenyan Katui, Mitei and Salomon, or Spanish Chema Martinez and Javier Diaz Carretero. The race in the
female competition will rather be Ethiopia vs. Spain. Moroccan Nazha Machrouh can spoil this match. Wudinesh Nega (2:30:56), Ehite Bizuayehu Gebreyes (2:32:19), Abeba Teklu Gebremeskel (2:36:05) and the newcomer Alen Kifre are the top contenders from Ethiopia. FUKUOKA (JPN): The Fukuoka Cross Country on Saturday February 23 will be Japanese qualifier for World CC Championships in Poland. The combination of results from Chiba and Fukuoka will be decisive.
INDIANAPOLIS (USA): Beth Alford-Sullivan of Penn State and Mike Holloway of the University of Florida have been tapped to lead Team USA as the women’s and men’s head coaches at the 14th IAAF World Championships in Moscow. Named as assistant coaches for the women’s staff for Team USA were: Latanya Sheffield (sprints/hurdles); Delethea Quarles (jumps/combined events); Lance Deal (throws) and Juli Benson (distance). Names as assistant coaches for the men’s staff were: Curtis Frye (sprints/hurdles), Stephen Cooksey (jumps/combined events), Brian Blutreich (throws) and Troy Engle (distance).

SUMY (UKR, Feb 14): Men 400 m final became the highlight of second day at Ukrainian national indoor championships. Winner Volodymyr Burakov and silver medalist Vitaliy Butrym finished both with personal bests and Goteborg standards 46.70 and 46.85. All medalists in men high jump cleared 225 cm (Goteborg standard). World champion 2005 Yuriy Krymarenko was successful in second attempt and European team champion Dmytro Demyanyuk and Vitaliy Samoylenko cleared the bar in third attempt. Three Goteborg standards in triple jump. Champion Yevhen Semenenko with 16.67m leaving behind Viktor Kuznetsov 16.64 and Viktor Yastrebov 16.61. Reigning European 4×100 m champion Olha Zemlyak was the fastest in women 400 m 53.57. Solid first day of Vasyl Ivanytskyy in heptathlon with 3419 points and mainly 772 long jump. His other marks: 7.12 – 13.26 – 211. Volodymyr Kyts won men 1500m 3:43.87 and Serhiy Sahutkin the 60 m sprint 6.77. Viktoriya Molchanova was the winner in long jump 634 only 2c m over combined eventer Hanna Melnychenko (632).
PRAHA (CZE, Feb 14): Bulgarian Viktor Ninov won the 34th edition of Prague High Jump with music in Metropole Zlicin shopping center. He defended his last year win with 230 clearance what is his overall personal best. Second Jaroslav Baba got 227 and third Brno winner from Tuesday Chinese Yu Wang 220.
COPENHAGEN (DEN, Feb 13): Swedish thrower Leif Arrhenius after 20.24 PB in Vaxjo on Saturday improved here again to 20.29 at Sparta Indoor meet. It is third best ever in Sweden indoors and the best indoor shot put for a Swede in last 23 years.
LONDON (GBR, Feb 13): Montell Douglas clocked good 7.25 in the women 60 m at an open meet.
PATIALA (IND, Feb 14): Indian race walking champion is Gurmeet Singh who won the competition in 1:21:17. Chandan Singh (1:23:28) and former national champion Babu Bhai Panocha (1:24:01) filled the remaining places on the podium.
