Junior Sarah Baxter, the reigning Nike Cross Nationals champion, confirmed her status as the #1-ranked x-country runner in the country by covering the 3-mile Mt.SAC course in 16-minutes flat!
Her time crushed the previous record of 16:16, set by Amber Trotter in 2001, and led prep expert Rich Gonzalez to call Baxter’s race “The greatest (XC) performance ever”.(See the PrepCalTrack link above).
MARY CAIN
When junior Mary Cain ran at last weekend’s Manhattan College Inv. at Van Cortlandt Park, few people who saw the race were aware that it might have been the last time she would represent her school(Bronxville,NY).
Marc Bloom reported after the race that Cain was getting advice from noted coach Alberto Salazar, and then Runner’s World confirmed a few days later that Cain would indeed be coached long-distance by the Portland(OR)-based Salazar.
Salazar, who also coached Galen Rupp in high school, plans to have Cain racing against open competition, starting with the Dash to the Finish Line 5k in Manhattan, the day before the ING NY City Marathon.
“There is no question that Mary belongs in that company,” says Salazar, who stresses that, under their agreement, Cain retains her amateur status and future NCAA eligibility. “A talent like hers only comes around once in a generation. If you get a kid like her running right at a young age, she can accomplish incredible things. Mary is a girl with a special gift, and she and her family see an opportunity to develop that gift.” (From Runner’s World)
While Cain might be done with regular high school competition, she’s still eligible for the Foot Locker series and the Nike Cross Nationals, where she could face Sarah Baxter, the defending Nike champion.

Senior Ben Saarel won his 3rd straight 3A title and his winning time of 14:56.7 fell just short of the course record of 14:54.6, which was set in 2007 by Luke Puskedra, who went on to an All-American career at Oregon.

Touch of Kindness at a H.S. Meet
When Blaine High School (MN) cross country coach Rachel Karel introduced Tommy Anderson, a member of her team, and Ally Anderson, a student in her Spanish class and yearbook photo editor, she said, “Ally, Tom. Tom, Ally. You made each other famous.”
In a case of being in the right place at the right time, Ally captured dramatic photos of Tommy Anderson stopping when he saw an Irondale High School runner laying on the ground, reaching down to help him up and then running with his competitor’s arm draped around his neck. This happened during the Blaine Invitational Oct. 4 at Majestic Oaks.
