The proof is there: Nike Pre Classic is a two day event. The events this evening drew a crowd of 7,800 (last years crowd for Friday night was 4000).
The evening started with the women’s hammer, which had over two thousand fans watching an epic hammer throw. Betty Heidler took the lead in round one with a throw of 74.89m. Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland went in front of the German Hammer thrower with a throw of 75.60 meters.
American Jessica Cosby set an American record on her first throw, with her heave of 74.19 meters. Betty Heidler, of Germany, threw 75.93m in round 4, taking the lead for good.
Tatyana Lysenko of Russia had a nice series, 70.22m, 72.66m, 72.51m, 73.76m, 74.95m, 73.37m, with her fifth throw of 74.95m giving her third, moving Cosby to fourth.
Anita Wlodarcyzk threw 75.10m on her last throw, and remained in second.
The 800 meters showed me that Alyisa Montsho has the guts to be a medal contender. Hitting the 400 meters in 55.4 is no mean feat. Montsho kept going, and gutted out a very difficult last 100 meters. 1:57.37 is a fast time, and Montsho can go much faster.
The women’s 1,500 meters was a fine race. Alice Schmidt scored a big win and a big pb. Jennie Simpson was close, but that next gear is not there as of yet. Gabrielle Anderson is looking quite dangerous, with a very swift last gear. I believe Mike Durkin, 1976 Olympian, would have called that ” controlled aggression”.
Oh, the 10,000 meters.
First, Tirunesh Dibaba is back after a two year Odyssey. Dibaba is a nine global medal winning distance runner, with a kick that would make Steve Ovett grin.
Florence Kiplagat, who under the eccentric watch of Coach Canova, ran this fine race less than six weeks after a rather challenging marathon. She was also in flats.
The 10,000 meters on the track is a chess match over 25 laps. If one can not take that last 1,000 meters and make one’s competition gasp for air, then you better have a miler’s kick. Fourteen guys with pbs of under 27:30, and eight under 27:00?
The race was 27:30 pace through 5,000 meters, hitting 13:43. As marathoner Wilson Kiprop, quite modest by Kenyan standards, with a
Pb of 2:09, dropped the hammer, it was only Moses Masai, and pre teen Bitan Karoki, who ran a 2:31 last 1,000 meters, with a 2:01 last 800 meters, and finally to show he was king of his domain, Wilson Kiprop dropped a 58.6 last lap, with arms upheld in victory as he past Masai for the last time. In my vernacular, we might suggest that Mr.Kiprop sure has some big ones. Or perhaps, Mr Kiprop just knew better than us, that he could win such a stacked race.
Jeff See was first American in the International mile. Matt Centrowitz ran his outdoor pb on a recovering knee. Not sure what is up with Alan Webb, always hate seeing a top runner fighting his or her demons, but Alan just needs a couple good races.
