This weekend, LaShawn Merritt faced his toughest competition at the 2012 Nike Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon. He was up against the top 400m runners in the world. This race was considered a preview of what the 400m final will look like at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

The two-time 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist was victorious beating world champion, Kirani James and gold medalist, Jeremy Wariner.

LaShawn had a slow start, coming late out the blocks. After the race, he stated that he was not sure what happened once the gun went off, but he knew he had a lot of making up to do in the stacked race which also held gold medalist, Angelo Taylor and one of the best in the world, Chris Brown of the Bahamas.

What looked like what would be a similar outcome of the 2011 World Championship race in which Kirani took home gold and LaShawn silver, LaShawn was determined to show he was the better man by staying true to his form, not getting too excited in the last 100m and finishing strong. It was a close finish with him and Kirani, but LaShawn won first place coming in at 44.91.

Next up for LaShawn is the Olympic Trials back at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. He will finish his Olympic training at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL with his coach Loren Seagrave.
