(JPN, May 6): In very testing weather conditions the IAAF World
Challenge Meet was held in Japan on Sunday. It started at Golden Grand
Prix in Kawasaki with some sun and a big headwind, then rain, thunder
and lightning, then sunny with tailwind, then rain again with big
cross/tail wind. That all happened in two and half hours. From this
point of view high quality season debut by 2004 Olympic winner Liu Xiang
from China who achieved 13.09 at 110 m hurdles (+0.2). It is second
fastest of the year before his clash with US hurdlers in Shanghai on May
19. Second US Omo Osaghae 13.33. The only world lead in men´s steeple
by Kenyan Jairus Kipchoge 8:18.06 (also a meet record) ahead of
Conseslus Kipruto (World youth champion last year) 8:19.49 personal
best. Third Ethiopian Roba Gari 8:19.62 and fourth Gilbert Kirui 8:21.16
PB. Another Kenyan win for Job Kinyor in the 800 m (1:47.05). 400 m
world champion Amantle Montsho improved her season best to 50.52 clearly
to win the 400 m ahead of Jo Cuddihy of Ireland 51.78. US star Allyson
Felix won the 100 m in 11.22 (+0.1) after “mishap at the start” beating
Australian Melissa Breen 11.38. Former world champion Michelle Perry in
13.11 (+0.3) lost the women hurdles to Yvette Lewis 13.08. Fast men´s
100 m was wind-aided and surprisingly won by Chinese record holder Su
Bing Tian 10.04 (+2.9) who beat US Mike Rodgers 10.05 and world medalist
Kim Collins 10.07. In the first IAAF Hammer Challenge event of the year
win for Asian Games gold medalist Dilshod Nazarov 77.34 ahead of Pawel
Fajdek of Poland 76.31 and German Markus Esser 76.29. Young Ethiopian
Elem Gereziher (17) won women 800 m (2:05.86). Two wins for Australia,
men got 39.00 in the 4×100 m (beating China 39.02 and Japan 39.03) and
Lauren Boden clearly won the 400 m hurdles, but due to difficult weather
times not available. Remaining wins for home athletes. Takayuku
Kishimoto at 400 m hurdles (49.31 beating US Johnny Dutch 49.52), Yohei
Sugai in long jump (798, +0.8), Genki Dean in javelin (81.43, over world
medalist 2009 Yukifumi Murakami 80.26), Saeko Okayama wind assisted 667
(+4.1) in the long jump and two relay women 4×100 m (44.29) and men
4×400 m (3:04.15).
25 KM WORLD RECORD IN BERLIN
BERLIN
(GER, May 6): Dennis Kimetto stormed to a world record at the BIG 25
Berlin: Kenya’s 28 year-old newcomer crossed the finish line of the
traditional 25 k race in 1:11:18. Caroline Chepkwony was the women’s
winner, clocking a world-class time as well with 1:22:56 (fifth fastest
ever). Adding all running events of the day there were a total of 10,478
athletes competing in Germany ‘s oldest city road race. In the history
of the event, which started back in 1981 and always had the finish
inside the Berlin Olympic Stadium, this was already the seventh world
record. It was only the third time Dennis Kimetto competed in a race
outside Kenya . On Sunday he kept his clean sheet and additionally
collected his first world record. After taking the half marathons in Ras
Al Khaimah and Berlin the 25 k triumph was the biggest success of his
career so far. He improved the world record by 32 seconds. Two years ago
fellow-Kenyan Sammy Kosgei had clocked 1:11:50 in the BIG 25 Berlin. A
leading group of six runners passed the 5 k mark in 14:00 , then reached
the 10 k point after 28:21 and the 15 k point in 42:46 minutes. They
were well inside the world record at these points and kept the pace
high. Wilfred Kigen as second was also below the former record 1:11:29,
third Jacob Kendagor 1:11:59 and fourth Edwin Kiptoo, all Kenya,
1:12:39. First non-Kenyan fith Ethiopian Neguse Aschalew 1:14:40. “It
had been our aim to break the record. We knew throughout the race that
we were on time to do it,” said Dennis Kimetto, who hopes to be selected
for the Kenyan team for the World Half Marathon Championships in
October. “Next year I want to run my marathon debut. And the long term
goal in the marathon will be the world record,” the 28 year-old said. In
women category second Taemo Shumye of Ethiopia 1:25:21 and third
Christelle Daunay of France 1:25:27 national record.
GOOD START BY BORLEE BROTHERS

(USA, May 5): Borlee brothers started well into the season. Jonathan
won the 200 m at the Texas Tech Raider Open in personal best and
European leader 20.31 (+0.7). His twin brother Kevin clocked 45.33 in
the 400 m and was second behind Gil Roberts who dipped under 45 seconds
(44.93). Then Kevin ran with Gillet, Destatte and Froidmont 3:04.68 in
the 4×400 m for Belgium. They were third as South Plains clocked fast
3:01.32 ahead of Texas Tech 3:03.87. Chavez Hart won the 100 m in 10.28
(+1.7) and Jerome Wilson leaped to windy 820 (+2.9) in the long jump. In
women 200 m Candace Jackson won in 23.11 (+0.8) ahead of Olivia Borlee
23.24. Shade Weygandt improved in the pole vault to 450 cm.
RESULTS
FAIRFAX (USA, May 5): 20-years old David Verburg improved to 45.06 at the 400 m when winning the CAA Championships title.
CAPE GIRARDEAU (USA, May 5): Good sprint doubles at Ohio
Valley Championships. Zye Boey clocked 10.31 (+0.6) and 20.94 (-0.7) in
men sprints and Alexis Love 11.28 (+0.4) PB and 23.33 (+1.6) in women.
EUGENE (USA, May 5): Andrew Wheating opened at Oregon Twilight
with 3:44.97 win at the 1500 m. Higher quality the 1:46.44 by Tyler
Mulder in the 800 m ahead of Australian Lachlan Renshaw 1:46.91. World
indoor champion Ashton Eaton clocked wind assisted 13.57 (+2.3) at the
110 m hurdles. In women events world leading steeple 9:39.77 by Bridget
Franek.
CLEMSON (USA, May 5): Bahamian 2007 World medalist Derrick
Atkins won here at Bob Pollock Spring Invitational with wind assisted
10.10 (+3.1) ahead of Maurice Mitchell 10.15. Manteo Mitchell got 46.06
in the 400 m and Drew Brunson legal 13.64 (+1.6) at 110 m hurdles. 2009
World medalist Josanne Lucas of Trinidad achieved at 400 m hurdles with
57.29. Fast windy times for Chastity Riggien 11.09 (+3.7) at 100 m and
Michalyn Golladay 12.86 (+3.0) at 100 m hurdles.
UNIVERSITY PARK (USA, May 5): At Jim Thorpe Open World indoor
champion Ryan Whiting posted high quality 21.50 in the shot put. His
outdoor season best. Kirsten Nieuwendam won the women 200 m in new
national record for Surinam 23.47 (+0.7).
BIRMINGHAM (USA, May 5): Fast sprints here by Gloria Asumnu of
Nigeria 11.21 (+0.3) at the 100 m and Kimberlyn Duncan 22.75 (+0.1) in
the 200 m.
AIX-LES-BAINS (FRA, May 5): European
Champion Christophe Lemaitre clocked at Interclub meet 20.48 (-0.5) in
his 200 m season opener.
BIALA PODLASKA (POL, May 5): Good throwing by Polish athletes.
Damian Kusiak 20.45 in the shot put and Przemyslaw Czajkowski 64.09 in
discus.
SOSNOWIEC (POL, May 3): New national best here at women 500 m by Tina Matusinska (nee Polak) with 1:10.16.

(AUT, May 6): Kenyan Martin Kiprugut Kosgei won the 9th Salzburg
Marathon in sunny weather in 2:16:36. Also other podium places for
Kenyans James Mregu 2:16:44 and Julius Mbgubua 2:16:49. Women winner
Joan Rotich in 2:36:08 in her first marathon outside Kenya and fast
first half (1:13:48). Second Risper Kimaiyo the title defender 2:39:15.
Austrian titles for Karl Aumayr 2:23:25 (5th overall) and Karin Freitag
2:47:14 (3rd overall), personal bests for both. Among the spectators
also world record holder Patrick Makau.
HANNOVER (GER, May 6): Kenyan Joseph Kiptum clocked 2:09:56 to
win Hannover Marathon ahead of Ethiopian Mergesa Bacha who also got
2:09:56. Third Peter Kurui of Kenya 2:10:09 and best European 8th Barry
Minnock of Ireland 2:17:40. Women winner Natalya Puchkova of Russia
achieved new course record 2:30:17 ahead of Ethiopian Mekuria Aberume
also 2:30:17. Third another Ethiopian Halima Hassen 2:30:26.
MAINZ (GER, May 6): Kenyan Silas Toek won the 13th Mainz
Marathon in 2:12:17 beating Tanzania´s Mohamad Msenduki 2:13:28 and
Berhanu Kassa of Ethiopia 2:14:04. Best European Roman Prodius of
Moldova 2:14:25 as fifth. Russian Tatyana Vilisova was the best woman in
2:32:01 ahead of Olha Kotovska of Ukraine 2:33:15.
TRIESTE (ITA, May 6): Kenyan wins at the 13th Maratona
d´Europa here. Victor Kimeli Kiprono 2:17:02 and Rebecca Jerotich
2:37:10. Second places for Italian runner Migidio Bourifa 2:18:57 and
Elisa Stefani 2:39:46.
CAGLIARI (ITA, May 6): Claudette Mukasakindi of Rwanda debuted
in marathon when winning the 3rd edition of Cagliari Marathon in
2:40:18. Men winner Kenyan Abraham Talam clocked 2:22:35.
GENEVE (SUI, May 6): UNICEF Marathon winners were Ethiopian Asfaw Tewodros 2:19:26 and Russian Yulia Vinokurova 2:44:29.
