2011 Bank of America Chicago Marathon: Moses Mosop runs 2:05:37, Liliya Shobukhova runs 2:18:20! by Larry Eder

The 2011 Bank of America Chicago Marathon will be one for the record books, as Moses Mosop, of Kenya, who ran away from Wesley Korir between 30 and 35k, to run a new course record of 2:05:37. Mosop, who set world records at 25k and 30k in Eugene in June 2011, has had achilles injury this past summer, and is, per his coach, Renato Canuvo, ‘only 80 percent”. One shutters to think about Moses Mosop fully fit, to paraphrase TV commentator Toni Reavis. Wesley Korir held on for second, after a gutty surge at 29k, running 2:06.15. In third, Bernard Kipyego ran 2:06.29. Bekana Daba of Ethiopia ran 2:07.59 for fourth and Ryan Hall finish fifth in 2:08.04.

Liliya Shobukhova, who has won in 2009 and 2010 in Chicago, did the first three peat at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon with her stunning 2:18:20 victory. Shobukhova not only ran the second fastest women’s marathon ever, a new Russian Federation record and probable selection to the Russian team for London 2012, with her sub 2:19 run. “I am so happy with my timing, my national record and my selection to the Russian team for London 2012. ” noted Liliya. Shobukhova had company, with Ejegayehu Dibab, 2004 Athens bronze medalist at 10,000m (her only road race from 2002 at NY Mini, where she ran fifth), and Japanese 5,000m/10,000m record holder Kayoko Fukishi. Shobukhova and Dibaba ran neck and neck for 25k, and then Liliya took off, putting 56 seconds between 25 and 30k, running 16:19 for that 5k.
