KIRUI FOR SECOND TIME
DAEGU (KOR): Kenyan Abel Kirui became only the second man after Spaniard
Abel Anton to successfully defend an IAAF world marathon title, running to
victory here on Sunday morning by the largest margin in the history of these
championships, two minutes and 28 seconds. Kirui clocked 2:07:38, the
second-fastest winning time in an IAAF World Championships behind his own
record of 2:06:54 set in Berlin
two years ago. Crossing the finish line in downtown Daegu, Kirui spontaneously
broke into a dance, reminiscent of the celebration by steeplechase champion and
Kirui’s Kenyan teammate Ezekiel Kemboi. “I really say, I am so glad and I
rejoice when I was dancing,” Kirui told the media after his victory. “I was rejoicing for my God and rejoicing for
my success. Because it was really,
really nice for me. I find myself
sometimes dancing and rejoicing.” Writes Race Results Weekly. The medals won by
Kirui and Kipruto were the fourth and fifth in the marathon events here (the
Kenyan women swept the podium), and gave Kenya a total of 16 medals at these
championships, including 7 gold, a record.
Kenya
handily won the World Cup in 6:29:23, based on the total time of their top
three finishers. Japan was second and Morocco was third. While Kirui had
the happiest day here, the biggest disappointment was felt by Ethiopia’s
Gebre Gebremariam, the reigning ING New York City Marathon Champion. Just 38 minutes in to the race, Gebremariam
slowed down, grabbed the back of his leg, and came to a stop. He then sat down in the roadway, his first
world championships as a marathoner finished.
STATS
(by Ken Nakamura):
Marathon : The lap time between 25 & 30Km was
14:18, fastest ever in the World Championships. Abel Kirui’s winning time
2:07:38 is the second fastest time in the WC, behind his winning time from Berlin. He now has two
gold medals to match the gold medal count of Abel Anton and Jaouad Gharib. The winning margin of 2:28 is largest ever in
the WC, far surpassing 1:19 from 2007 by Luke Kibet. KEN finished 1-2 for the second championships
in a row. ESP also has 1-2 finish (Anton
Fiz) in 1997. Both KEN men and KEN women won the marathon, the second time (first
was in 2007) men and women from the same nation won the corresponding event at
SC. It is KEN fourth gold; they now have more gold (4) than Spain who has
3. It is the fastest marathon in Daegu,
replacing 2:08:08 by Yusuf Songok from April this year. The differential
between 1st and 3rd of 2:54 is also a record, replacing 1:41 from 2009. Third
Ethiopian Lilesa is the youngest marathon world medalist ever.

OTHER NEWS
DAEGU (KOR): A request from Doha to hold
the 2017 World Athletics Championships outside the normal dates if they beat London is set to be
considered by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)
Evaluation Commission next month in what will be seen as a crucial test of the
city’s bid to host the 2020 Olympics.
The Qatar Association of Athletics Federations (QAAF) have made the same
request to the IAAF that the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) have made to the
International Olympic Committee (IOC) that they be allowed to move the dates
from the traditional window in July and August to later in the year when the
weather will not be so hot. At the time of the year that Doha hope to stage the
2017 Championships the group stages of the Champions League will be getting
underway while the NFL will have started in the United States and the IAAF may
fear that its event is not a big enough draw to compete against those sports.
The latest the World Championships have previously been held was in 1987 when Rome staged them between
August 28 and September 6. Writes insidethegames.
DAEGU (KOR): The Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Olivia Grange,
MP has congratulated Jamaica’s
Usain Bolt on winning the men’s 200 meters at the IAAF World Championships in South Korea.
Minister Grange said Bolt’s victory, in a world leading time, was “a fine
victory by an exceptional athlete. Bolt has delivered again. He ran a very fine
race and recorded the fastest time of year in the 200, despite not being in the
best shape. That is a phenomenal achievement. I offer Usain congratulations on
behalf of the Government and people of Jamaica whom he continues to make
very proud.” Writes TrackAlerts.
