conditions at the Athens Olympic Stadium was highlighted by two
magnificent new national pole vault records by Nikoléta Kiriakopoúlou,
who, after soaring over 462 with more than 10cm to spare, had then
another convincing clearance over 470, both heights in her first
attempt. The athlete burst into tears after her huge jump and called it a
day. Other notable performances were registered by hammer thrower
Alexándra PapayeoryÃou, who sealed her ticket for Daegu with 70.54m, and
the two recent European U23 champions, albeit not in their normal
events. 200m winner Likoúrgos-Stéfanos Tsákonas won the 100m with a new
pb 10.37 (-0.1), while two-times triple jump champion ParaskevÃ
PapahrÃstou scored an easy long jump victory with 6.50 (+0.1) on her
first effort. Other male winners were KonstadÃnos DouvalÃdis, clocking

twice at 19.90m but missed again the Daegu standard. In the women’s

IrÃni KokkinarÃou clocked 9:55.58 in a solo 3000m steeplechase race.
The women’s triple jump proved the most thrilling contest of the second
day, as just 1 cm separated the first two athletes. NÃki Panéta
unleashed in her 2nd attempt a huge pb and Daegu qualifying mark of
14.55 (+1.2), but Paraskevà PapahrÃstou had the nerves to reply with
14.56 (+1.8) in the next round, sealing her second victory in the
championships. Other double winners were Likoúrgos-Stéfanos Tsákonas who
clocked 20.89 against a +0.8 wind. KonstadÃnos FilippÃdis raised his
seasonal pole vault best to 573, before failing three times at a new NR
of 576, while Loúis Tsátoumas had some troubles with the changing wind,
but offered two solid jumps at 818 (-0.3) and 813 (-0.6). On the down
side PeriklÃs Iakovákis put an end to his admittedly worst year and will
miss a big championships for the first time. He may have notched his
14th consecutive title in the event, but the clock stopped at a
disappointing 51.27 (despite clocking 50.86 in his early morning heat)
and for the first time was very close to losing from other Greek
athletes. Other winners were Aléxandros PapadimitrÃou, who earned his
14th title, as well, in the hammer with 74.01 and Eléni Filándra in a
close finish in the 800m with 2:03.38. AdonÃa SteryÃou (1.85 in high

misappropriation of funds, tax evasion and their role in the Caster
Semenya affair. Evans has been chairman of the ASA board since September

JOHANNESBURG
(RSA): RRW informs that eleven weeks after South African 1500 m champion
Juan van Deventer’s hopes for the IAAF World Championships in Daegu,
