Runners Tyson Gay, Veronica Campbell-Brown, David Rudisha and Jessica
Ennis
PORTLAND, Ore. (March 22, 2011) – adidas America today kicked off an all
new Golden Stripes Series designed for high school track athletes, cross
country runners and multi-sport athletes throughout the nation. The
series includes multiple events surrounding the premium track and field
competitions scheduled this spring where the winners of the mile and
100M races receive invitations to compete at the Dream Mile and Dream
100M at the adidas Grand Prix in New York on June 11th.
“There’s positive momentum at adidas Running and the Golden Stripes
Series is an integral part of our long term plans. We are thrilled to
give high school athletes the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of
their heros,” said Mikal Peveto, director of running, adidas America.
“Our hope is to create additional incentive for young athletes to exceed
their goals and expectations and, in turn, do our part to cultivate the
next generation of track and field superstars.”
The field for the Dream Mile will consist of three regional qualifiers
and nine at large bids to be selected by adidas based upon season pr’s,
performance at high level meets and quality of wins. The goal of the
race is to break four minutes in the boys race and eclipse the national
record of 4:35 on the girls side. The field for the 100M will consist of
three regional qualifiers and six at large bids to be selected by adidas
and will be based upon the same criteria as the Dream Mile. The
ultimate goal of the 100M race is to produce the fastest US time for the
season.
The three qualifying meets include the adidas Meet of Champions in Azusa,
California on March 26, Kansas Relays, in Lawrence, Kansas from April
20-23 and the Golden South Classic, in Orlando, Florida on May 28.
The lucky 21 will earn an opportunity to race with some of the world’s
greatest track and field stars in the adidas Grad Prix including Tyson
Gay and Jessica Ennis. In addition, mile and 100M winners will receive a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to receive coaching from former mile world record holder and track and field legend, Jim Ryun, and the current indoor 60m world record holder Mo Greene, respectively.
adidas will partner with Flotrack to promote the series, relay the
results of each meet and produce feature stories behind the winners of
