Last night, at a reception for the adidas Grand Prix and NYC 10k, I had a few moments with
our friend, Walt Murphy. Walt and I were considering the possibilities of the men’s 800 meter final, between Wheating and Andrews. Shall we dare say it-perhaps a 1:43? Should be a race for the ages!

Virginia freshman Robby Andrews, who just turned 19 at the end of
March, ran an amazing 1:45.54 to win his semi-final race in the 800 on
the opening day of the NCAA Div.I Championships. His time moves him
into 3rd place on the All-Time U.S. Junior List(see below and
attached). The table is now set for a potentially great final, with
Andrews facing Oregon senior Andrew Wheating. Andrews surprised Wheating in the final five meters to win the NCAA Indoor title in March.
WIth both runners fond of coming from far off the pace, the scene for
Friday’s final at Hayward Field will be reminiscent of the 2008 Olympic
Trials, where Wheating came from behind in the stretch to join fellow
Oregonians Nick Symmonds and Christian Smith on the U.S. team in one of
the most electric races in U.S. history.
Complete results from Friday can be found at:

Field event action resumes today at 3pmPT(6pmET), with the first running event going off at 4:15pmPT(7:15pmET).
