PHILLIPS WINDY 842
HENGELO (NED, May 30): This
years edition of FBK Games, part of inaugural IAAF World Challenge 2010, was
hampered by rain and wind. At some stages the rain was strong, for example
during women´s 100 m
or at the end during men´s 100
m final. One meet record (women triple jump, world
champion Yargelis Savigne 14.34) was registered despite bad conditions.
A would-be world lead 842 by Dwight Phillips in long jump was marred by
too strong wind. Also four European leading marks of the season were achieved
(men 3000 m,
steeple, long jump, women 5000
m). The biggest enthusiasts remained in the stands
despite the showers and supported the athletes along with excellent event
presentation which could be observed also via live webcast. Temperatures from 8
to 14 and about 8000 spectators. Event by event review at www.world-challenge.org.
Main
issues were wins for favorites like Churandy Martina at 100 m, Abubaker
Kaki at 800 m, Meseret Defar in the 5000 m. Nancy Lagat
dominated the 1500 m
with world champion Maryam Jamal out of shape.
ENNIS AND CLAY WORLD LEADS
GOTZIS (AUT, May 30): World
champion Jessica Ennis held off a strong challenge from Olympic bronze
medallist Tatyana Chernova to clinch the Hypomeeting heptathlon title in Gotzis
on Sunday, writes David Martin. After seeing Chernova dominate the long jump
and javelin contests, Ennis ended the Russian’s hopes by convincingly beating
her over 800 metres
to triumph by an impressive 117 points with a score of 6,689, a world
lead. Chernova lived up to her reputation and produced a leap of 6.52 metres in the long
jump and a javelin throw of 51.35 metres, which closed the gap between the
pair to 77 points before the final event, while Ennis failed to perform as well
as she would have liked. The Sheffield star leapt only 6.13m and, although her
javelin distance of 43.10m was close to her season’s best. „I was really
nervous before the 800m so decided to stick behind her and take her at the
end,” said Ennis, who unleashed a terrific sprint in the final 200m to win
in a time of 2:11.19. Chernova scored 6572 ahead of Ukrainian Lyudmyla
Yosypenko (6260), German world medalist Jennifer Oeser (6193). Top 9 achieved
6000+ scores. Olympic winner Bryan Clay after difficult hurdles (14.08), solid
discus (49.85) had only 460
in pole vault and chances for a top mark were gone.
In javelin 66.19 and 1500 m
in 4:56.37 made it for world leading 8483 win. Second surprisingly French
Romain Barras (8297) and Cuban Leonel Suarez (8286) with US Jake Arnold (8253)
taking the next spots. Top ten achieved 8000+. From other top names Andrey
Kravchenko 6th (8112), Mikk Pahapill 7th (8084) and Dmitriy Karpov 14th (7894).
During two days in difficult weather conditions some top names did not finish
the contest because of different reasons (Fountain, Sebrle, Hardee, M. Smith,
Kasyanov among others).
