Bolt 9.92, Farah 13:09.14, Cantwell, 21.82m-on one foot!, Aviva London Grand Prix, Day One Results, and short deep thoughts, by Larry Eder

Christian Cantwell had the performance of the meet, after his foot was nearly broken when someone accidentally dropped a shot on it. Usain Bolt had the attention of the entire crowd, with his 10.2 jog, and his 9.92 final!

The folks at Fast Track and Uk Athletics know how to build drama in a meet. From the field selections by Ian Stewart, to the on field commentary by Catherine Merry, the Aviva London Grand Prix 2009, day 1, was, well, exceptional.
Nicola Sanders came out of a year long slumber and took the women’s 400 meters in grand style in 51.54, just edging Shana Cox in 51.56. Then, Jenny Meadows lead a British sweep of the women’s 800 meters. On the British side, Kate Dennison setting her eighth British pole vault record, 4.58m, which put her in fifth, and Mo Farah, taking the lead over the last straightaway to win in 13:09.14, his seasonal best, should have been the highlights.
Christian Cantwell had a shot put dropped on his foot. ” I thought my season was over!” noted Christian, but he had taken the lead early, in 21.29, then 21.39m. In round five, Reese Hoffa cranked a 21.55m out there. So, what could Christian do? He pops a 21.82m throw on his last throw, watches his sixteen pound ball of steel land, and runs over the victory stand, goes to the top, and puts the number one up with his fingers. That was showman ship, and thank God he did not break his foot. Perhaps he should train, pretending only one foot works.
Dayron Robles of Cuba, traded in his very chic Che Guevarra shirt from last night to his adidas speed suit and barely won the 110m hurdles in 13.29, with Ryan Brathwaite nearly stealing the race.
But the party really got bumping, when Usain Bolt ran. First, his heat, which had two false starts, then his final, where he got a sleepy start, took control at forty meters, turned in off about eighty meters and glided through in 9.92 meters. The crowd went nuts, there were fireworks and the music (Pop culture) was a fitting end to a great day of sport!
