WORLD LEADS FOR PHILLIPS, EVORA, REESE AND L. JONES, BAILEY SUB 10
BELEM (BRA, May 24): Great quality at 25th Brazilian Grand Prix meeting (IAAF GP) in local Sunday morning in more than 30 degrees hot weather, good for jumpers and sprinters. In total four world leading marks were registered (men 400mhurdles and triple jump, women 200 m and long jump). Jamaican Isa Phillips clocked in the local morning time 9.40 am in 33 degrees world leading 48.36 at 400 m Hurdles (also his PB). Olympic medalist Sheena Tosta missed the world lead of Lashinda Demus at 400 m Hurdles with 54.19 only by 0.02. Laverne Jones won the 100 m in new national record for US Virgin Islands 11.18 (0.0) already in 37 degrees temperature and later posted another national mark and world leading 200 m 22.49 (-0.8).
Antigua´s Daniel Bailey (coached by Bolt´s coach Glen Mills) improved again his national record and clocked 9.99 against -0.3 in 39 degrees at 10.15 am local time in the 100 metres. Behind Usain Bolt´s street split 9.91 from Manchester the fastest 100 m of the year. That was confirmed also by second US Mike Rodgers who improved his PB to 10.01 and Monzavous Rae Edwards who achieved 10.11. Fast times also in B-race as Jamaican Ainsley Waugh achieved 10.16 (+0.1) ahead of Emmanuel Callander of Trinidad (also 10.16). Jamaican Marvin Anderson posted fast 20.15 (0.0) to win the 200 m ahead of Mike Rodgers (another PB 20.24) and Brendan Christian of Antigua (20.26). In jumping events two world leads happened. Olympic winner Nelson Evora this time beat the Cubans with excellent 17.66 (+0.7) in triple jump. Only 8 cm were missing to his national record when winning the world title in Osaka (17.74). In strong depth David Giralt as second achieved 17.50, followed by Yoandri Betanzos 17.38 and Alexis Copello 17.30. Recent Doha winner and olympic fifth placer Brittney Reese surprised with world leading and first career seven metres jump 706 (+0.7). Home star and olympic winner Maurren Higa Maggi was only third (659) as also Keila Costa was better (678). In jumps only fourth attempts were allowed.
Olympic winner Primoz Kozmus of Slovenia won the opening event with season best of 79.90 in last throw. It is third best mark of the year 2009. President of Tadjikistan athletics federation Dilshod Nazarov was again the main rival for him as he achieved 78.47 as second ahead of Italian Marco Lingua (76.57). Jamaican Bobby Gaye Wilkins achieved years second fastest 400 m 50.91. In men´s 800 m top three clocked sub 1:45. Fabiano Pecanha for first time this year beat his home rival Kleberson Davide (1:44.63 – 1:44.65 PB) with Kenyan Reubet Bett clocking 1:44.79 PB as third. Olympic shot put winner Valerie Vili ended the Brazilian tour unbeaten with 20.25 ahead of Belarus Natalia Mikhnevich (19.89). US Jesse Williams cleared 233 to win the high jump and was able to beat home Jesse de Lima (231) and world leader Andra Manson (225).
VASCO BEATS RUSSIANS
METZ (FRA, May 24): Spain´s World medalist Maria Vasco won the 20 km women race at 8th European Cup Race Walking in 1:32:53. Best Russian Anisya Kirdyapkina was second (1:33:28) with Lithuania´s Kristina Saltanovic third (1:34:17). Next in order Ireland´s olympic 7th placer Olivia Loughnane (1:34:52) ahead of second best Russian Larisa Yemelyanova (1:35:16). Russia won with B-squad the team ranking with 14 points ahead of Spain 18 and surprise Slovakia (72). Disaster for favorites from Portugal, Ines Henriques and Vera Santos were disqualified, Susanna Feitor did not finish and only Ana Cabecinha finished as 13th in 1:38:01. It is first Spanish individual female win at European Cup and only third for Russian women team.
VASILEVSKIS WL IN JAVELIN
VALMIERA (LAT, May 23): First 90+ throw of 2009 by Athens 2004 silver winner Vadim Vasilevskis who achieved 90.71 at Jaunzeme and Lusis javelin meet. He missed his career best and national record from 2007 only by 2 cm. Beijing medalist Ainars Kovals was second far behind (79.29). That also means that the previously published mark of Finnish Mannio from Sunday is not a world leading mark.
NOVOTNY EL IN LONG JUMP
PRAHA (CZE, May 24): Olympic finalist Roman Novotny leaped at Czech Clubs League (1st division) to European leading 816 (+1.5) in Long Jump.
LEGHZAOUI COURSE RECORD IN OTTAWA
OTTAWA (CAN, May 24): Morrocan Asmae Leghzaou defended her last year title at Ottawa Marathon and improved her life-time best to 2:27:41, also a new course record. She had 2:28:44 from Ottawa last year. Liudmila Kourtchagina, a Russian living in Canada was second in 2:32:10 (four-time previous winner in Ottawa) and Kenyan Irene Jerotich third (2:34:28). In men race multiple winner here Kenyan David Cheruiyot was the best in 2:13:23 (his fourth triumph in Ottawa) ahead of Ethiopian Wegayehu Dirma (2:13:29) and Morrocan Ahmed Baday (2:13:56).
