When I truly got into running, I was a sophomore in college. I had just returned from a short stint in the Jesuit seminary, then, worked on the assembly line at Ford Motor Company for nine months, and finally, returned to Santa Clara University. It was in that fall that I met Gary Goettleman of Ryan’s Sport Shop, then on Bascom Avenue. Gary was a 2:22 marathoner and the most running geek adult I ever met. He challenged me to dig inside and when I hit 34 minutes for 10k, he told me that perhaps that was my limit. I got so mad, I increased my training, and a year later I broke 33 minutes. He smiled. Gary and his son, Steve run Ryan’s Sports in Santa Clara, California. I still have the first Track & Field News magazine Gary gave me, in June 1974. I can hear his voice challenging me. Like my father, Gary knew what made me tick, and I could not hide from his clear-sighted gaze. As a young man, it scared me, as a man now of a certain age, I miss the runs and the conversation. I know now, that was how he showed he cared.

Gary got me to train in adidas Marathon trainers, which kept my legs in good shape all though college. I loved them on long runs.
