The men’s 60m at the Muller Grand Prix in Birmingham was everything that a short sprint in an indoor meet should be. There were world-class performers but with prelims and final, there was scope to include lots of local athletes as well. The first prelim race provided drama or farce, depending on your perspective. When the gun went off, Andrew Robertson was left standing. But by the time the rest of the field reached the 50-meter mark, there was a recall. The starter announced over the PR system that someone had twitched and that he was calling a faulty start, with a green card. Fortunately, on this occasion, stadium announcer, Geoff Wightman showed sufficient restraint not to ask is the green card meant that all the athletes could now work in the USA.

The final was won by Noah Lyles from Ronnie Baker, both timed at 6.55 – a PR for Lyles – with Elijah Hall third, fully one 100th of a second behind. Michael Rodgers was fourth in 6.58, with Charlie Dobson fifth in 6.59, his second PR of the day. At 22, Dobson is 14 years younger than Michael Rodgers!

Noah Lyles commented: “That was fine and I was fired up. I felt like I was way more turned on than the first session. I was pretty sure I could do it when I learned at the end. I didn’t know I did it but I did!”
