In the fall of 1977, I entered a Jesuit Seminary. It was located in Montecito, California, on Ladera Lane, near Santa Barbara. Wednesdays were our break days. I was running most days, but on Wednesday, I would run down to the beach (8 miles) and return before my class walked down to the beach together. I was running in rebuilt Nike Waffle racers, which I had turned into high mileage shoes by Jeff Sink at Runner’s Warehouse in Los Altos, CA. Jeff was a shoe geek and he had made steeple shoes for Henry Rono, and was a cult favorite among running geeks.
I loved the run down to the beach, a slight downhill, and the ranches along the way were beautiful. The way back was all uphill and got me the hills I needed each week. And the heavily cushioned Nike Waffle racers were perfect for my long runs.
