Patton clocks 10.19
WACO (USA, Apr 18): US Olympian Darvis Patton impressed at Michael Johnson Classic as first this year with a sub 10 clocking at 100 m. His 10.19 (-0.4) is his 2009 opener, (has 9.89 from last year Olympic trials) and shows excellent shape in first race of the season. Second Mike Rodgers achieved 10.26 ( his PB is 10.06).
This was originally reported as 9.90 and 10.19, due to misread of the results. We apologize for the error.
Aldama wins strong triple jump, World lead for Mekonnen at 3000 m
DAKAR (SEN, Apr 18) : The only African IAAF Grand Prix fixture was held in warm (24 degrees) but very windy conditions. Best result was achieved in 3000 m with four sub 7:50 times. Ethiopian world indoor champion Deresse Mekonnen won in world leading 7:44.68 ahead of Kenyan Thomas Longosiwa (7:45.28), Demma Daba (7:46.72) and Abraham Chebii (7:47.67). US athletes got five sprint wins.Dominique Darden ran for victory in women´s 400m Hurdles in 57.08. Stephanie Durst topped the list of women at 100m dash with 11.10 (+5.8) ahead of her compatriot and world indoor champion Angela Williams in 11.22. Briana Glenn later won the 200 m in 23.13 (+4.6). Mark Jelks scored a double with 10.27s (+3.2) and 20.87 (+3.9). Badar Yahya of Saudi Arabia (51.53 at 400 m Hurdles) and Isaac Makwala of Botswana scored one lap victories (46.63) along with African champion Amantle Montsho with 52.30 at women 400 m beating US Monica Hargrove (52.36). Slow times due to wind at 800 m races by Kenyan Geoffrey Rono (1:49.72) and Russian Yekaterina Kostetskaya (2:06.00). Italian Alessandro Talotti won the High Jump with 225 as world champion Donald Thomas of Bahamas cleared only 210 as 7th. Home win for Kaba Badji in Long Jump but his excellent 829 were aided by +2.3. Karlis Alainis achieved Latvian javelin win with 75.53 m. Great field in women´s triple jump. Yamile Aldama who represents Sudan won with 14.32 (+4.6) beating Slovenian record holder Marija Sestak (14.19, +4.2), Italian Magdelin Martinez (14.09, +1.0), Olympic medalist Hrysopiyi Devetzi of Greece (14.08, +2.7) and Slovak record holder Dana Veldakova (14.06, +3.0).
OTHER RESULTS
ZANIEMYSL (POL, Apr 18): Jakub Jelonek achieved new 20 km PB 1:22:17 while winning the 7th edition of walking meeting. Second Rafal Augustyn got 1:23:32. Also new PB for women 20 km winner Agnieszka Dygacz 1:32:39.
TRONDHEIM (NOR, Apr 18): Bjornar Ustad Kristensen won the men´s 3 km race at Norwegian CC Short course championships with 8:58.2 ahead of succesfull junior Sondre Nordstad Moen (9:00.1) and Oystein Sylta (9:01.1). Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal was the clear women winner at 2 km with a time of 6:23.2.
RIGA (LAT, Apr 18): Latvian CC champions were Mareks Floroseks (26:03.35) and Polina Jelizarova (14:17.05).
BERN (SUI, Apr 18): 19 years old Kenyan John Mwangi won the 10 miles road race, the 28th Bern Grand Prix in 47:41. Last year winner Philip Njoroge also from Kenya achieved 48:26 and third Ethiopian Tesfaye Eticha 48:31. Only fourth multiple European CC Champion Sergiy Lebid of Ukraine who achieved 48:45. In women race Jana Muia of Kenya repeated her last year win in 55:52 beating Hungarian favourite Aniko Kalovics (56:17). Swiss win at 4.7 km as Philipp Bandi clocked 13:34. In total 22 417 runners entered the races.
USTI NAD LABEM (CZE, Apr 17): New Belgian javelin record in Czech Republic as Melissa Dupre 56.62 achieved here. Former record of Cindy Stas was 55.18 from 2004. Dupre is in training in Czech Republic together with world record holder Barbora Spotakova.
PARDUBICE (CZE, Apr 18): Kenyan Wilson Chebet won the “Vine Half-Marathon†in Pardubice with fast new course record 1:00:49. Second Willy Mwangi achieved 1:02:32 and third Tansanian Damian Chopa with 1:02:47. Robert Stefko defended the Czech title with 1:07:33 as overall 10th and best European. Lydia Njeri got the women race for Kenya in 1:14:44 and second Petra Kaminkova achieved another national title after 1:15:17.

LYON (FRA): The 25th Lyon marathon scheduled for April 26, was cancelled due to economic difficulties and disagreements among the organizers (the city, the athletics club and the organizing company Canal + event). The event lost its main sponsor, Suez, early April leading to a 30,000 euros deficit. The event had also recorded a 25% fall in the number of entrants. The record time was established by Kenya’s Elijah Korir in 1999 (2:09:43), but the winning time didn’t get below 2:20 for the past three years.
LAUSANNE (SUI): The European Athletics Congress decided today that the traditional autumn convention (replacing calendar conference) will be held in 2010 in Novi Sad, Serbia (this year the event will be in Budapest). In 2011 the next Congress where elections will take place will be held in London. European Mountain Running championships will have as new also junior boys and girls categories. At this years new competition European Team Championships (replacing European Cup) the zero false start rule will be provisionally implemented. Final ruling will have the IAAF Congress in August before the World Championships in Berlin.
