Niyonsaba WR, Allen sub 13

ZAGREB (CRO, Sep 14): Burundi’s Francine Niyonsaba smashed the world 2000m record at the 71st Boris Hanzekovic Memorial (WACT Gold) with 5:21.56 to break Genzebe Dibaba’s world record of 5:23.75 which she ran indoors in 2017. Her time also smashed Sonia O’Sullivan’s world outdoor record of 5:25.36 from 1994. Devon Allen broke the 13 second barrier in the 110m hurdles for the first time with 12.99 ahead of Jamaicans Ronald Levy (13.11) and Olympic champion Hansle Parchment (13.12), Olympic silver medallist Christine Mboma ran another fast time of 22.04 in the 200m to break Allyson Felix’s meeting record of 22.35 and Marvin Bracy clocked a fast 9.86 in the 100m to miss Usain Bolt’s meeting record by 0.01.

Other track highlights included Kirani James winning the 400m in 44.46 MR, Catalin Tecuceanu winning the 800m in a Romanian record of 1:44.93 ahead of Daniel Rowden in 1:44.98 and Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan dominating the 100m hurdles in 12.61. Olympic champion Valarie Allman from the United States won the discus with another huge throw of 69.63m ahead of Croatian heroine Sandra Perkovic (66.48m), fellow Olympic champion Daniel Stahl won the men’s discus competition with 67.79m from Austria’s Lukas Weisshaidinger.

KC Lightfoot cleared 5.87 MR in the pole vault to defeat four athletes at 5.82m including two-time world champion and Jamaica’s Shanieka Ricketts bounded out to 14.77MR in the triple jump. Getnet Wale was long time on course for a new World lead but faded and in 8:12.01 missed the steeple meet record by 0.21. South American record holder Gina Woodruff won the 400 m hurdles in 54.67 and Madara Palameika the javelin with 63.25 ahead of teen sensation Adriana Vilagos who improved to 62.36 the best ever U18 European result in this event with senior implement.
