Micah Kogo Breaks World Best with 27:01 for 10k! by Alfons Juck

Micah Kogo, the Beijing 10,000 meter bronze medalist ran 27:01 for 10k at the Parelloop in the Netherlands today, bettering the seven year old record of one Haile Gebrselassie by one second!

KOGO CLOCKS ROAD 10 km WORLD RECORD
BRUNSSUM (NED, Mar 29): Olympic 10 000 m bronze medallist Micah Kogo of Kenya clocked 27:01 to break the World 10k road record with an awesome display of front running in the 21st Parelloop in Netherland´s Brunssum. The 22 year old bettered the seven year old record of Haile Gebreselaisse by one second (in Doha 2002) to finish well clear of training partner Abraham Chebii who finished 2nd in 27:47. Always close to world record pace Kogo (first half in 13:33), who had a previous best of 27:07 from 2007, closed very fast in the final kilometre to set the new mark. Writes his agent Ricky Simms. Third place for another Kenyan Peter Kamais (28:18). Best European Dutch Patrick Stitzinger as sixth in 29:05. Also in women category the Kenyan favourite prevailed as Magdalene Mukunzi got 32:08 ahead of Leah Malot (32:55), Anita Kiptum (33:29) and Agnes Kiprotich (33:41). Best European the Russian Yelena Zadorozhnaya as 8th (34:30).
KASTOR WINNING RETURN
CHICAGO (USA, Mar 29): The jubilee 30th 8 km Shamrock Shuffle race saw Olympic medallist Deena Kastor (36) returning from injury and winning in 27:15. Male winner Emmanuel Korir achieved 24:18. More than 30 000 runners participated in this Chicago Running Spring Season opener.

WELLINGTON (NZL, Mar 29): Monique Williams achieved the best result during third and last day of New Zealand Championships with 23.15 at 200 m. It is resident national record for the athlete who has the national mark 22.98 from this years Sydney Permit Meeting. 19 years old Andrea Koenen achieved national junior record 23.77. In men´s 200 m Jeffrey Thumath with 21.09 beat favourite James Dolphin (21.18).
SANTA FE (ARG, Mar 29): Johana Moreno achieved during last days of final leg of Argentinian part of Grand Prix Sudamericano new Colombian hammer record with 69.80. She also beat the home star and continental record holder Jennifer Dahlgren (64.91).
KINGSTON (JAM, Mar 28): At Inter-Collegiate Championships as Jamaican media are informing Anastasia Leroy won the 200 m in 23.29 and was second at 100 m in windy 11.28 (+3.1). The winner here Shillonie Calvert clocked 11.18. Beijing 400 m finalist Rosemarie Whyte tried at 400 m hurdles with 59.89. Bobby Gaye-Wilkins, who was a member of Jamaica‘s quartet for the heats of the 4x400m in Beijing, took the women‘s 800m in 2:10.43 ahead of Kaliese Spencer, the 2006 World Junior 400m hurdles champion, who did 2:12.32. In the men‘s 100m final, which came with a supporting wind of +3.6 Kimmari Roche (10.19) beat Rasheed Dwyer (10.21).
ROAD
TREVISO (ITA, Mar 29): Italian champion in 6th Treviso Marathon in bad weather was the 40 years old Migidio Bourifa in 2:14:14 ahead of Mostafa Errebbah (2:15:31). Laura Giordano improved from her last year second place to winning 2:35:36 in women category beating Keynan Josephine Wangoi (2:37:21) and veteran Ornella Ferrara (2:42:38). Some 3000 runners participated.
AZPEITIA (ESP, Mar 29): Memorial Diego Garcia, the 16th Half-Marathon Azkoitia-Azpeitia saw pretty fast times. William Chebor of Kenya got 1:01:06 ahead of Samuel Mugo (1:02:06) and best homer runner Pedro Nimo improved to 1:02:48 as third. Yesenia Centeno was the best woman in 1:10:09.
WARSZAWA (POL, Mar 29): Kenyan Michael Karonei achieved 1:04:21 to win the 4th Carrefour Warsaw Half-Marathon. Best Polish runner Michal Kaczmarek as second (1:04:25). Sub 2:30 marathon runner Malgorzata Sobanska was the best woman in 1:13:13 just 3 seconds ahead fo Russian Natalya Sergeyeva (1:13:16).
POZNAN (POL, Mar 29): The second edition of Poznan Half-marathon brought only marginally slower times than the race in Warszawa on the same day. Boniface Wambua of Kenya got 1:04:30 ahead of his team-mate Elijah Mbogo (1:05:05) with Ukrainian Vitaliy Shafar third (1:05:39). In women section Gladys Otero of Kenya achieved 1:14:28 ahead of Edyta Lewandowska (1:14:43).
BRATISLAVA (SVK, Mar 29): In 4th “CSOB Bank” Bratislava City Marathon the women winner Hungarian Judit Folding-Nagy at age of 43 achieved new course record 2:50:21. The former mark was 2:56:22 by Dana Janeckova in 2007. In pouring rain second place for best home runner and last year marathon national champion Ingrid Petnuchova (2:51:05) and third Czech Ivana Martincova (2:54:17). Belarus Aleksey Haurychenko was the best in 2:21:40 and in his 20th career marathon missed the course record of Ukrainian Vasyl Remshchuk from last year by 1:57 min. No other runner achieved sub 2:30. Half-marathon was organised as Slovak Championships and the titles went to old-timer Miroslav Vanko (1:06:28) and Janka Zatlukalova (1:17:40 PB). But Vanko was not the winner as in Hungary living Ethiopian Ashenafi Erkolo achieved 1:06:03 and Ukrainian Sergiy Fiskowicz 1:06:15. In all races new participation record of 2259 runners.
FREIBURG (GER, Mar 29): Former Olympic track winner Dieter Baumann won the Half-marathon during the Freiburg Marathon in 1:09:26. The marathon winner did not went under 2:30.
RICHMOND (USA, Mar 29): Ethiopian runners won the men’s and women’s races at the head of a boisterous Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k that saw 32,745 registrants and thousands more cheering along the course. Tilahun Regassa clocked 28:21 and Amane Gobena 32:37.
CHALONS-EN-CHAMPAGNE (FRA, Mar 29): Fast Half-marathon “Courir pour la Vie” as Benjamin Bitok achieved 1:04:35 and Ugandan Adero Nyakisi 1:12:20 in women race.
RIETI (ITA, Mar 29): Winners at Italian Clubs Walking Championships were Matteo Giupponi (1:24:45) and Rossella Giordano with 43:53 at 10 km.

US SATURDAY ACTION: HANANY WORLD LEADING 230 cm
CINCINATTI: 21years old Antoine Drakeford broke for first time in his career 46 seconds at 400 m with 45.83 PB at invitational meet here.
ARLINGTON: In bad weather conditions double world champion Jeremy Wariner clocked at Bobby Lane Invitational in his second 200 m of the year 20.85 (+0.7).
EL PASO: French Mickael Hanany cleared as first this year outdoors the 230 cm in High Jump. He had great series jumping all heights in first including 220, 225 and 230 and registered misses only at 233. Olympic Long Jump bronze medalist Nigerian Blessing Okagbare leaped to 644 (+0.4) in her season opener at UTEP Springtime meet.
BATON ROUGE: Jamaican Nickeisha Wilson achieved 56.06 at 400 m Hurdles during second day of LSU Relays. Solid relay times for Tiger Olympians women 1:32.68 at 4×200 m and 3:30.15 at 4×400 m. Baylor men got 3:04.93 at 4×400 m.
TEMPE: Porscha Lucas clocked world leading 11.24 at 100 m (-0.1) at Arizona State Invitational meet. Her Texas AM got solid 43.82 at 4×100 m and 400 m specialist Jessica Beard 23.15 (0.0) at 200 m. In men races Deun White improved at 200 m to 20.71 (0.0) and 2006 world junior silver medalist Justin Oliver clocked 46.19 at 400 m. Fourth placer from Olympic Trials Justin Gaymon achieved 50.01 in his 400 m Hurdles opener. Chris Hill came close to his PB in javelin with good 81.03 m.
