Barshim tied with Tobe at 230
TOKYO (JPN, May 9): At the Ready, Steady, Tokyo Olympic Games test event (WACT Gold), world champion Mutaz Essa Barshim from Qatar cleared 2.30m in the high jump. He shared the victory with Naoto Tobe while Takashi Eto finished third on countback also at 2.30m. Even a jump-off could not decide the winner. Another of the select group of international athletes invited to compete, Justin Gatlin won the 100 min 10.24 (0.0) from Shuhei Tada in 10.26. The times and positions were reversed in the heats with Tada and Gatlin finishing first and second in 10.24 and 10.26 respectively. The best quality event of the competition was the 400m hurdles with Kazuki Kurokawa winning in 48.68 PB from Hiromu Yamauchi (48.84 PB) and Masaki Toyoda (48.87 PB) and national record-holder Taio Kanai won the 110m hurdles in 13.38 (-0.8) from Shunsuke Izumiya (13.43). Another standout result was 19-year-old Ryuki Miura, still, a junior, winning the 3000m steeplechase in 8:17.46 national senior record ahead of Kenya’s Philemon Ruto (8:21.10) while teammate Joan Chepkemoi won the women’s 3000m steeplechase in 9:39.29. Elsewhere on the track, world U20 3000m champion Nozomi Tanaka won the 1500m in 4:09.10, and Japan’s Takashi Ichida (13:27.73 PB) and Kenyan teenager Teresia Muthoni (15:10.91 PB) took the victories in the 5000m. There were other notable victories for Yuki Hashioka with 8.07 (+1.8) in the long jump, Takuto Kominami with 80.98m in the javelin, Shota Iizuka 20.48 (+1.4) in the 200 m, and Asuka Terada with 12.99 (-0.8) in the 100m hurdles.
