RunBlogRun presents
Socialing The Distance
with Larry Eder
Featuring Tom Bedford,
Race Director of the British Marathon Trials/Co-Founder of the Richmond RunFest
Tom Bedford is a curious sort. A former elite athlete, son of an elite athlete, Tom knows the sport from a rarified place. Yet, he seems to thrive on developing events in places and in formats that’s are at best, problematic and at worst, difficult to manage.
Tom and his wife, Jade, have developed a successful race management company, the unique Richmond Distance Festival. Tom seems at his best when dealing with events, and situations that many would be intimidated by.
Now, Tom Bedford and Jade plus his father, David Bedford, have been building an event, the 2021 British Olympic Marathon Trials, plus 20k and 50k Trials.
This remarkable event, the first singular British Olympic Marathon Trials held in 40 years. Putting an event like this together, in a pandemic is asking for trouble. I believe, Tom Bedford likes a challenge. He gets it, dealing with 3 Trials events. On the same day, with many different demands as elite events.
Elite events not only go much faster, but much more is on the line. Two male marathon spots, 3 women’s spots are huge. Both race walks require judges watching events of 12.4 miles and 31.6 miles.
The course? A small 1.666 k loop and 12 3.333 k loops. A good, honest course with few fans and much on the line.
On March 26, 2021, the British Olympic Marathon, 20k Racewalk, and 50k Racewalk Trials will be held. And it will be magnificent.
Enjoy the interview.
