LONDON (GBR): Kelly Holmes has predicted that Britain’s athletes will be a success at the Olympics in London despite falling short of their target at Beijing this year. Dame Kelly, the double Olympic 800 and 1500 metres gold medallist in Athens in 2004, claimed that there had been encouraging signs from the British team in Beijing even though they won only four medals, one short of the target set by National Lottery distributor UK Sport. She said:
„In Beijing we had more finalists and more personal bests, but we want more
medals and I think they are on their way. Athletics is a showcase for the
Olympic Games, so the expectation is that the sport will produce more
medals. I think we have got young hopefuls and hopefully the experiences
they have had in Beijing will mean they come to the fore in 2012.” Infomrs
