Privalova qualified, Guschina clocks 50.80
KAZAN (RUS, July 17): Former Olympic winner Irina Privalova qualified at age 40 from heats during first day of Russian Championships. In the morning programme she clocked 11.52 in the 100 m and advanced to semifinals. The fastest times for Natalya Rusakova and Yevgeniya Polyakova both 11.29. World indoor medalist Andrey Yepishin was the fastest in men´s 100 m heats (10.52).
European 4×100 m relay champion Yulia Gushchina clocked the fastest in 400 m heats 50.80 (her PB), sub 51 also for Yelena Migunova (50.91) and Lyudmila Litvinova (50.93). Other favorites also advanced headed by European leader Anastasiya Kapachinskaya (51.01), world indoor champion Olesya Zykina (51.78), olympic medalist Natalya Antyukh (51.19). In men´s 400 m heats Maksim Dyldin as fastest achieved 46.10. In triple jump qualification the best result for Olympic medalist Danil Burkenya (16.75).
In the capitol of Tatarstan nearly 900 athletes are competing. Todays finals in the evening are both shot put competitions and 10 000 m for men and women.
Chambers verdict on Friday
LONDON (GBR): Agencies are reporting that Sprinter Dwain Chambers will have to wait until Friday to find out if his High Court challenge to an Olympic ban will be succesfull. A decision had been expected on Thursday but the judge presiding over the appeal is now expected to reveal his decision on Friday, one day before the BOA must submit its athletics team to the International Olympic Committee.

Soboleva 1:57.14, Gushchina 50.45
KAZAN (RUS, JULY 17): In the afternoon programme of first day of Russian Championships world indoor record holder Yelena Soboleva confirmed her excellent shape with great 1:57.14 best 800 m heats time. It was tough because from first round only 8 fastest qualified to finals. That meant that all finalists (Friday) clocked sub 1:59. Fast return of Helsinki 2005 medalist Tatyana Andrianova (1:57.94), qualified also European champion Olga Kotlyarova (1:58.84). Fastest from heats in the morning Yulia Gushchina improved again in the semifinals of 400 m to 50.45, also qualified Tatyana Firova (50.61) and Tatyana Veshkurova (50.93), from other semi Anastasiya Kapachinskaya (50.68). Out were olympic medalist Natalya Antyukh (dnf) and relay gold medalist Natalya Nazarova (only 54.16). Fast 400 m semis also for men as Maksim Dyldin (45.42) and Denis Alekseyev (45.45) clocked their bests. World champion Tatyana Lebedeva won the triple jump qualification with 14.49 with Oksana Udmurtova beeing second best (14.44). In technical events qualifications winners were Igor Vinichenko (hammer 73.51), Ivan Yushkov (shot put 20.49) and Mariya Yakovenko (javelin 59.66).
