Lyles 9.88 and 9.89 DES MOINES (USA, Jun 22): Noah Lyles set a world lead of 9.88 (+1.1) to become the youngest US 100m champion, erasing the World lead of Mike Rodgers from heats (he did not run semifinals) and his own 9.89 (+0.7) set in the semi-finals earlier on day two of the US Championships. The 20-year-old was followed by Ronnie Baker (9.90) and Kendal Williams with Isiah Young (both 10.00). Mike Rodgers after WL in heats did not run in the semifinals. Aleia Hobbs won the women’s event in 10.91 (+0.6) after a good start (she also clocked windy 10.89 +2.2 in semifinals), while Ashley Henderson was second in 10.96 and Jenna Prendini third in 10.98. Zach Ziemek won the men’s decathlon with 8294. Rudy Winkler took his second national hammer title, registering 73.76m to leave Alex Young (73.22m) second. Maria Michta-Coffey clocked a stadium record in the 20km walk with 1:35:21.59. Donald Scott won the triple jump with a PB 17.37 (+0.9) 5 cm ahead of Chris Benard (17.32 0.0) and third KeAndre Bates 17.16 (+1.0). World record-holder Kendra Harrison led the qualifiers for the 100m hurdles semi-finals with 12.46 (+0.8). Dawn Harper-Nelson, Kori Carter, Brianna McGhee and Sharika Nelvis all progressed too. Fastest in the men’s 400 m semifinals was Michael Cherry with 44.87, triple star Christian Taylor was a non qualifier in 45.95. TJ Holmes was fastest among the 400m hurdles semifinals winners with 49.00. Erik Sowinski (1:46.39) and Ajee Wilson (1:59.34) were fastest from the 800 m heats.
