RUSSIAN CLUB WINS, CHARFREITAG GETS MEET RECORD 80.45 m
VILA REAL DE SANTO ANTONIO (POR, May 25): Russian Teams repeated their wins at European Champion Clubs Cup for third time in a row since 2006 (last non-Russian by Italian men of Fiamme Gialle in 2005). Women of Finpromko-UPI dominated clearly with 134 points ahead of Spanish champion Valencia Terra y Mar (110) and Panellinios of Athens (95.5). Men of Luch Moscow had final score 115 which was also well ahead of Dukla Praha from Czech Republic (106) and Spartak Dubnica of Slovakia (102). Relegation to B-group for men of French CA Montreuil and Turkish Enka Spor Kulubu and in the women competition for Spartak Dubnica (only one point behind USK Praha) and again French Montreuil.
Slovak Osaka hammer bronze medalist Libor Charfreitag achieved new meet record with 80.45 what is also second best of the year. Surprisingly in South of Portugal rain, wind and cold weather. Portugal sprinting star Francis Obikwelu won the 200 m with 21.19 (-3.8). Kenyan wins for Dubnica by Bernard Kiptum (7:57.26) and Collins Kosgei (8:30.09, steeple) and also another one by Dmitrij Valukevic in Triple Jump (16.90). For Spanish Jerez Cuban Frank Casanas registered a good discus win 63.10. Spanish Ruth Beitia achieved nice 195 high jump win for Valencia, the same goes for Josephine Oniya at 100 m Hurdles with 12.97 against -2.3 wind. Other quality results by Russian women. Olympic and world winner Tatyana Lebedeva opened her season with 669 (+3.4) in long jump but beat Slovak Jana Veldakova (668, +2.2) only by one cm. Yulia Guschina clocked 23.04 at 200 m and world and European champion Tatyana Tomashova 4:13.70 at 1500 m. Turkish world medalist Elvan Abeylegesse achieved clear 5000 m win (15:52.34).

ZHANG LI 62.09 IN JAVELIN, SECOND JUNIOR EVER
BEIJING (CHN, May 25): Chinese javelin thrower Zhang Li achieved 62.09 best to win her event during last day of Good Luck Beijing pre-olympic competition. It is second best ever in junior all-time list, she was only 84 cm behind the world junior record of Xue Juan from 2003. Asian record holder Lie Ximei won the triple jump (14.31, 0.0). Another junior Xue Fei dominated the 5000 m in 15:42.95. Chinese women won the 4×100 m (43.69) and Japanese the 4×400 m (3:33.23). On the men side Australia clocked 3:03.71 at 4×400 m (Mulcahy-Batman-Ormrod-Hill). Patrick Johnson who was fastest in semis at 200 m (20.81) did not finished the final which was won by Li Mingxuan (20.91, -0.1). China beat Japan at 4×100 m (39.45-39.46). Malaysian Lee Hup Wei improved with 227 national record to win the High Jump.
KIPCHOGE CLOCKS 1:44.52
BELEM (BRA, May 25): 30 872 spectators saw the 24th Brazilian Grand Prix meet with IAAF GP status in Belem to end the five meets series in last two weeks (in total three meet records today). Second fastest 800 m of the year by Kenyan Gilbert Kipchoge 1:44.52 (meet record) was the clear highlight of the morning meet in hot temperatures. Another triple jump clash ended again with win for Grenada´s Randy Lewis (17.15) just 3 cm ahead of Bahamian Leevan Sands (17.12). US champion Aarik Wilson was third (16.98) and local star Jadel Gregorio only fourth (16.82). The crowds could be on the other hand satisfied with Maurren Higa Maggi whon again triumphed in long jump with world-class 683 (+0.2). Jamaican Korene Hinds clocked new meet record at 3000 m steeple (9:36.12) beating the African Champion Zemzem Ahmed of Ethiopia (9:38.65). Commonwealth champion Sheri-Ann Brooks of Jamaica won both sprints (11.18, +0.6 and 22.70 PB, +0.3). Solid times also at second places: Laverne Jones (UVI, 11.24) and US Debbie Dunn (22.76, PB). Another Jamaican win for Melanie Walker at 400 m Hurdles (54.18). Also on the men side Nesta Carter achieved 100 m first place for Jamaica (10.19, +0.6) ahead of US Chris Hargrett (10.24). US Hurdler Joel Brown won his event after 13.2 (+2.1) hand timed and afterwards produced in second section of 200 m nice win (20.36, +2.7). In the first race US 400 m runner Greg Nixon clocked 20.43 (+0.6) to beat Jamaican Ricardo Williams (20.46). Close call at 400 m Hurdles as Adrian Findlay beat Markino Buckley (both Jamaica, both 49.11). Expected Kenyan steeple win for Patric Langat (8:26.95) and also for Slovakian hammer record holder Martina Hrasnova (72.27, MR, the third win in one week in Brazil). Decathlon world champion Bryan Clay tested his shape with 10.45 at 100 m and 758 in Long Jump (won by US Tony Allmond 799). US April Steiner won the Pole Vault (445) when the home favorite Fabiana Murer no heighted at 435. Cubans dominated women shot put (Misleidys Gonzalez 18.78 and Mailin Vargas 18.48).
PITKAMÄKI LOST TO RUUSKANEN
KUORTANE (FIN, May 25): World champion Tero Pitkamaki started with a loss his 2008 season. At special javelin meet in Kuortane he achieved good 86.89, but was beaten by Antti Ruuskanen who improved to 87.33 m in last attempt. Tero Jarvenpaa as third got 85.89 ahead of Teemu Wirkkala (83.74). Jelena Jaakola was the best woman (58.89, new national junior record).
FOFANA 17.34 IN TRIPLE JUMP
FORBACH (FRA, May 25): French Triple jumper Colomba Fofana improved to European leading 17.34 (+0.1) at meet in Forbach on Sunday. Behind him also good marks by Jules Lechanga (17.07, +1.0) and Karl Taillepierre (16.93, +0.9). Yves Niare confirmed his shape of the life with 20.42 win in Shot Put. Sprint record holder Ronald Pognon clocked good 10.32 in heats of 100 m (0.0), but in finals against -1.7 got only 10.51. Very good 45.57 by Leslie Djhone at 400 m and Garfield Darien 13.65 (-0.8) at 110 m Hurdles. German junior Raphael Holzdeppe went over 560 cm to win (tried at 571 three times). Osaka medalist Romain Mesnil only 530 (fifth). Three good women marks. Hammer thrower Stephanie Falzon improved to 73.33 m. Triple jump European Indoor medalist Teresa Nzola registered 14.18 (+0.9) and Adriana Lamalle clocked 13.20 at 100 m Hurdles against -1.8 breeze.
D. CHERUIYOT 2:11:00 AND LEGHZAOUI 2:28:44
OTTAWA (CAN, May 25): Under a beaming sun and in front of thousands of spectators, Asmae Leghazoui of Morroco won the ING Ottawa Marathon clocking new course record 2:28:44. Organizers are informing at their website. The previous record, established by Lioudmilla Kortchaguina in 2006, was 2:29:42. Russian Elza Kireyeva got 2:33:45 ahead of another Ethiopian Kebebush Haile (2:33:47). Kenyan David Cheruiyot, the 2007 marathon champion, won his third title with a time of 2:11:00, just 27 seconds short of the course record he established last year (2:10:33). Second Ethiopian Solomon Molla (2:11:04) and third another Kenyan Vincent Kiplagat (2:11:54). Best European Swiss Stephane Joly as ninth 2:15:38. In their debut marathons, Giitah Macharia and Tara Quinn Smith captured the men’s and women’s Canadian titles. New Canadian Macharia completed the ING Ottawa Marathon with a time of 2:16:54, while Quinn-Smith of Toronto finished with a time of 2:33:57 (fourth overall).
The Weekend registered 32,873 participants in seven races overall.

OLOMOUC (CZE, May 25): Hurdler Petr Svoboda started the season at regional meet with good 13.71 (-0.5).
WIEN (AUT, May 25): The open Decathlon meet for everybody had a winner from Latvia. Atis Vajsjuns scored 7304 points and in heptathlon Czech European junior medalist Nikol Ogrodnikova achieved a Bydgoszcz qualifier 5403 (javelin 52.23 m).
GARBSEN (GER, May 25): New German 230 High Jumper is Raul Spank who achieved that mark at jumping Olympic qualifiying meet. Favorite Eike Onnen after 210 did not passed 221 and was fourth. Nils Winter won the Long Jump (794) and Katja Demut got solid 14.00 in Triple Jump.
ROSKILDE (DEN, May 25): 10 000 m Nordic Challenge winners were Matti Rasanen of Finland (29:43.63) and Norway´s Kirsten Otterbu (32:31.45).
SLOVENSKA BISTRICA (SLO, May 25): Olympic finalist Miran Vodovnik achieved at National Grand Prix meet 20.07 in Shot Put.
POZNAN (POL, May 24): Anita Wlodarczyk won the Polish University Championships with 71.13 in hammer. Experienced Krystyna Zabawska got 17.75 in Shot Put.
BRUSSELS (BEL, May 25): The 29th 20 km race of Brussels registered Kenyan male win by Willy Kiptarbei (1:00:36) and home female triumph of Fatima Baouf (1:10:56).
MT. ST. MICHEL (FRA, May 24): Patrick Tambwe won the marathon here after 2:16:40. French Laurence Klein was the best woman (2:41:24).
OTTAWA (CAN, May 24): Kenyan Julius Kiptoo won Ottawa 10 km road race (IAAF Silver Label) in 28:37.0 ahead of compatriots Samuel Ndereba (28:53.9) and Moses Macharia (29:03.5). Ethiopian Emebet Bacha was the best woman (32:42.1). In gender challenge women’s field was given a head start of 4:05. Writes IAAF. A US $5000 prize was on tap for the overall winner and it was a very close finish won by Kiptoo in addition to $5000 first place in their respective races.

BELEM (BRA): The South American Athletics Confederation, “Consudatle” celebrated its 90th anniversary on Saturday in the Brazilian city of Belém where on Sunday the IAAF Grand Prix Meeting is held. IAAF Vice President Sebastian Coe was present at the event along with such running Brazilian personalities like Joaquim Cruz, Agberto Guimaraes and Jose Luiz Barbosa.
