Home women team leads B-Group
VILA REAL DE SANTO ANTONIO (POR, May 24): Home women team Sporting Clube de Portugal clearly leads B-Group European Champion Clubs Cup event with 53 points after first day. Former New York Marathon winner Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia who as guest competes for the leading squad won 3000 m in 9:49.82. Javelin thrower Silvia Cruz of Portugal came close to her own national record 59.74 with 59.57 win. Second and third Maccabi Reshion Lezion of Israel and Swiss ST Bern are having 34 points. British Manchester City leads the men B-Group with 57 points ahead of Sparta Copenhagen (51), Maccabi Tel Aviv (48) and CZ Beograd of Serbia (45). Best result was the windy 802 (+2.6) by Danish Morten Jensen in Long Jump. Top two teams will be promoted into A-Group.
Perry clocks 10.04
PROVO (USA, May 24): BYU High Performance meet continued at favorable altitude with some high quality results. Sprinter Preston Perry from Carl Lewis Team improved to 10.04 (+1.0) at 100 m, second Jamaican Julien Dunkley improved to 10.07 and third Carlos Moore clocked 10.10. Perry´s previous best from last year was 10.14. Moore then improved at 200 m to 20.36 (+1.7). Osaka relay World champion Mechelle Lewis clocked season best 11.19 (+0.1) at 100 m. Ebonie Floyd achieved solid 22.81 (+1.8) at 200 m. Fast hurdles were aided by too strong wind (+3.2) as Dawn Harper clocked 12.61 and Nichole Denby 12.63. New Canadian record by Kelsie Hendry in Pole Vault (455) highlighted the technical events. US Shani Marks improved in Triple Jump to Olympic A-qualifier 14.23 (+1.3) and Shakeema Welsch registered also PB 14.15 (+1.4) but is missing the qualifier by 5 cm. World Junior Champion 2004 Michelle Carter improved her Shot Put best to 18.71. On the men side Jesse Williams and Jamie Nieto went over 225 in High Jump and Casey Malone registered 63.87 in Discus. Canadian hammer record holder Jim Steacy got two wins (76.70 and 76.98). Walter Henning as third improved hugely US junior record with senior implement to 73.73 m.
Kiptoo wins 5000 m
NAIROBI (KEN, May 24): During second day of 29th Kenyan Army Forces Championships John Korir after beeing second at 10 km finished fourth at 5000 m (13:40.0). Winner Mark Kiptoo achieved 13:39.1. Former youth silver medallist Jackson Kivuva clocked 1:47.8 in the 800m after a solo effort in the last 100m. Abraham Chirchir was on course for victory in the 3000m Steeplechase until the second last lap when he fell at the water jump and moved to third (8:33.3). In his place Linus Chumba out ran former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Abraham Cherono (8:31.0) at the home stretch to stop the clock at 8:29.0. Informs IAAF. Veteran Irene Kwambai was third in the 5000 m (15:56.8) race won by Linet Chepkurui in 15:55.3. Gladys Cherono was second in 15:56.0. World Championships bronze medalist Shadrack Korir won the 1500 m (3:41.5).
Powell calls
FORT LAUDERDALE (USA): Agencies are reporting that 100 m world record holder Asafa Powell believes drug cheaters should be treated like criminals and be thrown into jail for their wrong doings. “Throw them in prison,” Powell was quoted as saying in Times Online. “Let them face some harsh time there. Taking drugs is illegal, because when police catch someone on the streets doing it, they go to prison.”
Sanders to compete in Eugene
LONDON (GBR): Osaka 400 m silver holder Briton Nicola Sanders is yet to open her summer season. The European Indoor Champion 2007 plans to run at Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on June 8 in her first important race of the year where she will face Sanya Richards. Sanders also commited to Aviva London Grand Prix end of July.

PLZEN (CZE, May 24): Czech sprinter Petr Szetei improved to 20.96 (+0.4) at 200 m during regional championships.
SHIPPENSBURG (USA, May 24): 17 years old Chanelle Price came close to her best at 800 m with 2:02.90.
FORMIA (ITA, May 24): Good high jumping by Italian boys. Nicola Ciotti, Filippo Campioli and Alessandro Talotti all cleared 227 cm.
BOSTON (USA, May 24): Australian Oceanian record holder Sarah Jamieson clocked season best 4:06.73 to win her event 1500 m at High Performance Meet.
OSHKOSH (USA, May 24): Best result at NCAA III Championships by Hanneus Ollison who improved at 400 m to 46.40.
WALNUT (USA, May 24): Windy sprints by Dennis Boone highlighted the NCAA II Championships. He clocked 10.21 (+2.2) and 20.65 (+2.2). Good quality 50.05 at 400 m Hurdles by by Damian Prince. Long distance revelation Scott Bauhs won tactical 5000 m (14:00.65).
EDWARDSVILLE (USA, May 24): Canadian wins at NAIA Championships. Ruky Abdulai achieved 651 (-0.6) in Long Jump, Michael Mason went over 221 cm in High Jump.
