London Marathon will have a news sponsor from 2010
LONDON (GBR): Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin has signed a five-year deal worth 17 million pounds to become the official sponsor of the London Marathon from 2010. Virgin Money the group’s financial services division, will lead the new partnership with the ambition of supporting the event and the runners in their attempts to raise even greater amounts of money for good causes over the period. Since the world’s most popular marathon began in 1981 over 400 GBP million has been raised for charity by fun runners. The London Marathon 2010 will be the 30th in its rich history. The inaugural London Marathon saw 6255 runners finishing on Constitution Hill and with 34,497 runners crossing the finish line on The Mall in 2008 has continued to be a massive draw to both runners, spectators and television viewers alike. The 2009 event has already received over 110,000 UK applications for the public ballot. Informs David Martin.
Sihine and Kanter added
HENGELO (NED): The organizers of first IAAF GP meet in Europe this year the FBK Games of Hengelo (May 24) announced new two top names into their already great field. The so-called shadow of Haile and Kenenisa Sileshi Sihine will come to run the 10 000 m with the aim to qualify for Beijing. He will make it tough for Mr. Hengelo Gebrselassie as this race could be the major one in determining the Ethiopian Olympic team at this distance. With Kenenisa Bekele as clear team member two places are left. In addition to Sihine and Haile also Dinkesa, Gebremariam, Wendimu and Assefa will run in Hengelo.
Discus men is having the best possible addition with world champion Gerd Kanter of Estonia who leads the current lists with great 71.88 m. He will face for second time in five days his main rival and Olympic champion Virgilijus Alekna of Lithuania. They will compete together on May 20 in Turnov, Czech Republic at Danek Memorial. On the side of cancellations is European 800 m champion Bram Som because of injury.
Young Dibaba at 3000 m
CARSON (USA): Ethiopian group of female runners will be represented on Sunday at adidas Track Classic in Carson with the youngest revelation. This years World Junior CC Champion Genzebe Dibaba is going to compete at 3000 m. The younger sister of 10 000 m world champion Tirunesh Dibaba will have her second pro meet as she competed already last year at New York Grand Prix (10th at 5000 m 15:43.46). It looks for sure that she will achieve her PB, her known best is 9:26.0 at altitude of Addis Ababa in 2006.
World sprint champion has a new sponsor, feels pressure, expects fast times
LOS ANGELES (USA): As www.forbes.com informs, Alltel Wireless, America’s largest network, announced that it has entered into a sponsorship agreement with triple sprint World Champion Tyson Gay. It is good news for US top athletes. The World Athlete of the Year Gay is running on Sunday in Carson his first 100 m of the year and second 200 m. Tyson Gay also said at media function before Sunday´s meeting that he already starts to feel the Olympic pressure and that he expects fast times not only this weekend, but also on May 31 in New York during his clash with Jamaican world leader Usain Bolt.
Athletissima plans new stadium
LAUSANNE (SUI): One of the world best one day meetings Athletissima of Lausanne hopes to stage the meet in 2012 in new stadium. As the organizers informed at a press conference, there are currently three projects under study for only athletics stadium with 15 000 capacity. The main issue is the old story with soccer club wanting its own stadium. Meet director Jacky Delapierre thinks also about possible future events in new stadium like World Junior championships or new European Teams Championships. For this years edition in unusual date of Sep 5 already confirmed are heptathlon queen Carolina Kluft for Long Jump and Olympic winner Christian Olsson for Triple Jump. Close to final agreement is the participation of Asafa Powell, Tyson Gay and Liu Xiang. The organizers of Athletissima said that if Liu will travel to Europe after Olympics, first meet would be Lausanne. The budget as informed by Swiss Media is 3.2 millions of Swiss Franks.
Macey, Rutherford, Lyne are back
LONDON (GBR): Three of top British athletes with injury past are looking forward to try to qualify for Olympic Games. Dean Macey fourth finisher in the last two Olympic decathlons, plus Greg Rutherford and Becky Lyne the 2006 European long jump and 800 metres silver and bronze medallists, are well on the road to recovery.
Madrid Change
MADRID (ESP): The top one day meeting in Spain, the IAAF Grand Prix fixture in Madrid on July 5 will move from the Estadio de Madrid to a new site – the Polideportivo Municipal de Moratalaz with a capacity of 5500 spectators – compared to 2.000 before. There will also be a new track as well as better press and VIP facilities.

Myerscough to challenge his ban
LONDON (GBR): British shot putter Carl Myerscough is the first banned British athlete that wants his doping-related Olympic suspension lifted for the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. The British Olympic Association (BOA) confirmed that it received a letter from Myerscough’s lawyers stating the intention to issue proceedings. The 28-year-old athlete was given a two-year ban in 1999 after testing positive for a cocktail of anabolic steroids. Myerscough has never admitted his guilt but claimed he was a victim of a conspiracy. In 2004, he had already appealed to the BOA against the ban, but lost. He did not take legal action then saying he could not afford it. Legal experts estimate that an appeal in the High Court could cost up to 250 000 GBP. It had been widely believed that sprinter Dwain Chambers would be the first British athlete to try to get the ban overturned in the courts.
Pumper confirmed
WIEN (AUT): The B-sample analysis of Austrian marathon runner Susanne Pumper confirmed the findings of prohibited substances (EPO). That means she is now facing a two years ban until 2010. For the 37 years old long distance runner not a good news in terms of her running future. As informed by Austrian media, she wants to ask for a hearing and fight for her innocence.
Chambers and his future
LONDON (GBR): Dwain Chambers is likely to make his decision whether to challenge his lifetime Olympic Games suspension by challenging the British Olympic Association’s byelaw in the next few days. The 30-year-old sprinter who served a two years suspension after testing positive for the designer substance tetrahydrogestrinome (THG) in August 2003, is because of the offence, permanently banned from ever again competing at Olympic level.UKA performance director Dave Collins stressing the governing body is unaware of Chambers’ future intentions, said if the BOA ruling is overturned in the High Court, just as for the World Indoor Championships, there would be little to prevent him competing in Beijing.
Discussions about Kollark
DARMSTADT (GER): German media have accused coach Dieter Kollark of having been involved into the East Germany doping system and of having given performance enhancing drugs to athletes in the 1980s. Kollark is the coach of discus World Champion Franka Dietzsch and husband of former shot put World Champion Astrid Kumbernuss. The German Athletics Association announced that it will examine whether the accusations are correct and decide about possible consequences once its investigations are finished.

Both 100 m and Long Jump were aided by +3.0. With hurdles beeing his strongest event he is on the way to improve his 7808 best from last year.
