The City of Chicago saw some amazing things on Sunday, October 8, 2017. An American male won for the first time since 2002, and Tirunesh Dibaba shows why many believe that she is the one who could eventually challenge the WR of one Paula Radcliffe.

In this presser, emceed by NYAC Director of Communications James O’Brien, Galen Rupp explained his plan to “remain invisible” until after 22 miles. The most talkative and effusive that Galen Rupp has been ever, he provided us an enlightening view into his tactics, his support system and his appreciation of how much his lovely wife has given up so he can focus on being the global athlete he is becoming.
Tirunesh Dibaba spoke through interpreter Sabrina Yohannes, was happy with her win, but slightly disturbed that she had not taken down Paula Radcliffe’s Course record of 2:17:18. Dibaba told us that her futures is on the roads.
An immensely pleasing race to watch, with women going out fast, and men too tentative (I felt like I was watching a championship mile race for a while), but the final act of the men’s race showed Galen Rupp (and Coaches Alberto Salazar and Pete Julian) had done their homework.
