World’s fastest woman to Malmö Games
Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson won three Olympic golds in sprint in Rio last summer and is one of the hottest star in the world of athletics. On Friday 18 August she will run 100 meters at Malmö Stadium, Sweden.
Last summer Thompson lowered her personal best at 100m to 10.70 which is a time that only three women have ever surpassed. Then she went on to win Olympic gold at 100, 200 and 4x100m and copied team mate Usain Bolt’s achievement.
– I am looking forward to run 100m at Malmö Games! It will be my first visit to Sweden and it will be fun to meet the Swedish audience, says Elaine Thompson.
She started the season really good clocking 10.75 in a tail wind just above the legal limit and then won 200m in the Diamond League premiere in Doha followed by a 100m victory at 10.78 in Shanghai.
Elaine Thompson is only 24 but already the sprint queen or the world. She has her strength in the last part of the race which not only took her to three Olympic gold medals but also victory in Diamond Race at both 100 and 200m.
– We are delighted to have Elaine Thompson running at Malmö Games! She is truly one of the best athletes in the world right now and will probably be the sprint queen for years to come, says Daniel Wessfeldt who is Meeting Director of Malmö Games.
Several top sprinters have competed at Malmö Stadium during the years, among others world record holder Florence Griffith-Joyner (10.49), Merlene Ottey and Marion Jones who holds the stadium record of 10.87 from 1998. That’s in jeopardy on Friday 18 August when it’s time for a new athletics chapter at Malmö Stadium.
