H. YEGO THE SURPRISE WINNER
ATHENS (GRE, Nov 10): Kenyan Hillary Yego produced a major surprise
by taking the Athens Classic Marathon on his debut at the distance. In warm
weather with temperatures soaring to well over 20 Celsius during the
race he ran 2:13:59 on the tough original course, leading from the town
of Marathon to the Panathinaikon Stadium in Athens. Fellow Kenyans
Dickson Cheruiyot (2:14:40) and David Rutoh (2:14:47) took second and
third. Defending champion Raymond Bett (Kenya) dropped out after the
half way mark. Joan Rotich completed a Kenyan double, leading from the
start and crossing the line in the old Olympic Stadium in 2:41:38.
Ukrainian Svitlana Stanko (2:42:03) and Greek runner Magda Gazea
(2:46:07) finished in second and third positions. A record number of
11,000 runners took part in the 31st Athens Classic Marathon. Adding
other events at shorter distances a total of more than 30,000 athletes

HURU AND TIGABEA
SORIA (ESP, Nov 10): Ugandan outsider Dickson Huru won the opening race
of the IAAF Cross Country permit season 2013-14 at Cross Internacional
de Soria with 30:07 at the 10 km. He was followed by group of Spanish
runners who are in the qualifying process towards the European CC
Championships in Belgrade. Second Alemayehu Bezabeh 30:08, third Mohamed
Marhoum 30:31, fourth Antonio Jimenez 30:39 and fifth Abdelaziz
Merzoughui 30:44. Pre-race favorite Kidane Tadese from Eritrea was 10th
in 31:20. In women 8 km win for Ethiopian Marta Tigabea 28:06 ahead of
home runners Estela Navacues 28:10 and Alba Garcia 28:11. Fourth Britton
with interesting name Juliet Potter 28:12.
KIPSANG FIRST WIN SINCE 2008
BEIRUT (LEB, Nov 10): William Kipsang registered his first marathon win
since his famous victory at the 2008 Rotterdam marathon when he won the
11th edition of the International Beirut Marathon in 2:13:34. Informs
the IAAF. He was followed by another Kenyan Benjamin Serem 2:13:45,
third Ethiopian Gemechu Lemma in 2:14:17 ahead of another Kenyan Sammy
Malakwen 2:14:47. In the warm weather Ethiopian runners took the first
two places in the women’s race with Rehime Kedir first in 2:33:29, the
seventh successive Ethiopian women’s winner, and her compatriot Shuko
Genemo Wote second in 2:36:47. Over 36 000 runners participated in the
various races.
JEBET AND SORI IN CANNES
CANNES (FRA, Nov 10): Kenyan Salina Jebet won the Alpes Maritimes
Marathon from Nice to Cannes in 2:41:34. Second Genet Teka of Ethiopia
2:42:32 and third former solid track runner Kenyan Gladys Kwambai who
debuted in 2:44:12. Ethiopians dominated in men race, got the full
podium. Winning Abdisa Sori 2:13:38 ahead of Edeo Telo 2:13:58 and Wosen
Zeleke 2:14:13.
THREE GOLD MEDALS FOR NORWAY
REYKJAVIK (ISL, Nov 9): At Nordic Cross Country Championships three gold
medals for Norway, two for Denmark and Sweden and remaining one for
Finland. Norwegian wins in junior races. Heidi Martensson in junior
girls race with 15:07 at 4.5 km three seconds ahead of Finnish hopeful
Oona Kettunen 15:10. European Rising Star 2013 home runner Anita
Hinriksdottir was fourth in 15:37. Team title here for Finland ahead of
Norway. Also junior boys individual gold for Norway as Erik Udo Pedersen
clocked 18:16 at 6 km just one second over Anders Lund Hansen from
Denmark 18:17. Denmark won the team title over Sweden. Then Swedish
success in senior women race as Charlotta Fougberg won in 25:41 at 7.5
km and also the team title for Tre Kronor. Second Norway´s Inger Nielsen
25:43 and third Simone Glad from Denmark 25:51. Abdi Hakin Ulad who
represents Denmark won the men senior race at 9 km in 26:38 clearly over
Orjan Gronnevig from Norway 26:41 and Denmark´s Michael Nielsen 26:54.
Here team title for Norway.
OTHER RESULTS
VOLPIANO (ITA, Nov 11): Italian Belgrade selection race at the Cross
della Volpe. In women 7 km Elena Romagnolo won in 25:42 ahead of Elisa
Desco 25:49. In men´s 9 km Simone Gariboldi triumphed in 28:45 over
Giammarco Buttazzo 28:48 and Michele Fontana 28:52.
RIVA DEL GARDA (ITA, Nov 10): Rwandan Eric Sebahire won the Garda
Trentino Half Marathon in 1:04:10 in close race over Kenyan Matthew
Rugut 1:04:10.
CONTROGUERRA (ITA, Nov 10): Kenyan wins at the 17th Corsa di San Martino
15 km. Julius Rono clocked 44:41 c
learly over Boniface Bii 46:44. Eunice
Chebet as best woman 52.22 ahead of Jane Jelagat 54:05 and Marcella
Mancini 55:45.
HERNE (GER, Nov 10): Top marathon runner Eleni Gebrehiwot won here the
11th St. Martini 10 km road race in 33:27.
BIEL (SUI, Nov 10): Bernard Matheka 24:12 at 8 km and Jane Muia 22:07 at
6.4 km were the Kenyan winners at the Biel Cross Country.
INGOLSTADT (GER, Nov 9): European Indoor 3000 m silver medalist Corinna
Harrer won two races at the Cross Meet-In taking the 3.1 km 10:52 and
7.1 km in 26:01. Male winner Philipp Pfleger clocked 9:36 and 23:11 at
the same distances. In the 600 m Fabienne Kohlmann got 1:37 win and
Johannes Trefz 1:25.
PFORZHEIM (GER, Nov 9): German Cross Cup started here with first from
three legs. Winners here showed top shape in terms for selection for
European CC Championships. For example junior girls winner at 4.2 km
Alina Reh (15:19) or men U23 winner at 8.4 km Tom Groschel 26:27. He was
overall second best as Kenyan Evans Korir topped the field 26:15.
Johannes Motschmann was the best junior at 6 km in 19:02. Top female at
6 km Kenyan Nancy Chepkemui 21:10 ahead of Ursula Gatzweiler 21:14.
NOVE ZAMKY (SVK, Nov 9): Juraj Vitko won the Slovak CC title at 9 km in
30:11 and qualified for European CC Championships in December in
Belgrade. Second Jozef Urban 30:12 and third Imrich Magyar 30:37 ahead
of triathlon Olympian Richard Varga 30:43. Marathon Olympian Katarina
Beresova won the women 4 km in 14:03, it was for her 5th title. In the
shorter 4 km the track specialist Jozef Pelikan won in 13:04, second
Peter Durec 13:10 and third 800 m World University Games medalist Jozef
Repcik 13:14.
FORT DODGE (USA, Nov 9): African runners won the individual races at the
JUCO CC Championships competing at the Lakeside Golf Course here. Harry
Mulenga of Zambia in 24:40 at the 8 km and Kenyan Hannah Maina in 18:13
at the 5 km. Their schools topped the teams, men of Central Arizona
College and women of Iowa Central.
SANTA BARBARA (USA, Nov 9): Finland´s Elisa Karhu won the women division
at the Santa Barbara Marathon in life-time best 2:42:45. She was overall
third, top male runner did not break 2:30.
DUBAI (UAE, Nov 8): Hungarian Zsofia Erdelyi won the Dubai Women 10 km
Run in 33:16 ahead of the Ethiopian Yeshi Kalayu Chekole 33:44 and
Kenyan Gladys Jemaiyo 33:54. Fourth Russian Natalya Popkova 34:08. In
the accompanying 5 km Yelena Korobkina of Russia won in 15:12 over
Ethiopians Hiwot Gebrekidan 16:20 and Mihret Tefera 16:31. In the 10 km
613 finishers and in the 5 km 1483 women crossed the finish line.
