Negari and Kiprop in cold
ROME (ITA, Mar 17): More than 14 000 people started in tough cold Rome the marathon in Eternal City. After a slow start (15:01 at 5 km) because of cold and wind until the 30th km. Half marathon was achieved at 1:03:43 and 30 km at 1:30:34. Ethiopian Getachew Negari became the new winner in front of Colosseum in 2:07:56 close to his 2:07:32 PB. Second place for another Ethiopian Birhanu Gebru 2:08:11 life-time best while third was the best Kenyan Stephen Chemlany in 2:08:30. Fifth place for 2012 winner Lukas Kanda in 2:08:50. Before him fourth Haile Gemeda of Ethiopia 2:08:35 PB. Best European was Hermano Ferreira of Portugal as 13th in 2:14:53. Women pack was headed by favorites until the 30 km (1:42:18), after that in few minutes the situation changed completely with an impressive push by Helena Kirop who won at the end with 2:24:40. Second Ethiopian Selomie Getnet 2:25:15 PB while third Turkish Sultan Haydar 2:27:10. Ashu Kasim as fourth already over 2:30 with 2:30:10. Next European Russian Nadezhda Leontieva 2:32:14 as 7th. Ethiopian winners in Barcelona
BARCELONA (ESP, Mar 17): Ethiopian winners at the 33rd Zurich Marato de Barcelona. Gezahgne Abera with 2:10:17 and Lemelen Berha 2:34:39 personal best. In the 12 degrees temperature second Kenyan Abraham Keter 2:10:48 and third Linus Maiyo 2:11:34. Best Spanish Jaume Leiva improved to 2:13:41 as 5th. In women results under 2:40 also second Bosho Fikadu of Ethiopia 2:35:53 and third Kenyan Irene Mogaka 2:38:46.
Chepkwony and Chepchirchir
SEOUL (KOR, Mar 17): Kenya’s Franklin Chepkwony cruised to a comfortable victory in the men’s race at the 84th Seoul International Marathon while his compatriot Flomena Chepchirchir won the women’s competition to complete the first ever Kenyan double here. Chepwkony clocked 2:06:59 and will get 80 000 USD first place bonus, second Ethiopian Shumi Dechase 2:07:12 PB, third Seboka Tola also from Ethiopia 2:07:27. Chepchirchir got 2:25:43 to be the top woman and as in the men race ahead of two Ethiopians. Second Embet Bedada in great life-time best 2:25:53 and third Yeshimebet Tadesse 2:26:18, also PB. Japan’s Yuki Kawauchi, who only six weeks ago won the Beppu-Oita Marathon on home soil, exactly matched his personal best of 2:08:15 set in that race when finished fourth. He has now run five Marathons since the start of December, but his three-race winning streak was snapped Sunday. For the second straight year, Kim Sung-eun finished fourth overall and was the first Korean home 2:27:21 life-time best. Fifth Kenyan Lydia Jerotich as fifth 2:28:22 personal best. 7th Russian Yevgeniya Danilova 2:32:27. Informs the IAAF.
Duliba Belarus record
LOS ANGELES (USA, Mar 17): Aleksandra Duliba (25) of Belarus in her marathon debut has won the women’s race and 50 000 USD gender challenge in the 28th Asics Los Angeles Marathon in 2:26:08 a new national record. Second Ethiopia’s Zemzem Ahmed got 2:30:32 and third popular US runner and former olympic medalist Deena Kastor 2:32:39. Kenyan Erick Mose has won the men’s race, after outkicking countryman Julius Keter in the 24th mile. Mose won in an time of 2:09:44. The course record stands in 2:08:24. Keter finished second 2:10:31 while Nicholas Chelimo, also of Kenya, was third in 2:10:43. Fifth Vitaliy Shafar of Ukraine 2:13:30. Cal State Fullerton product Nick Arciniaga finished seventh in 2:17:04.

NEW YORK (USA, Mar 17): NYC Half Marahton was run in winter conditions after snow on Saturday and minus 2 degrees at the start. Kenyan Wilson Kipsang won in 1:01:01 ahead of a surprise second placer Italian Daniele Meucci 1:01:06 and US Dathan Ritzhenein 1:01:10 with Kenyan Leonard Korir fourth 1:01:19. World champion Bernard Lagat debuted at the distance as 12th in 1:02:33. Daniele Meucci told to EME NEWS: “I was so happy for my result, so cold at the start and the first 5k very useful for warm-up. I was not able to follow Kipsang and the gap became gigger and bigger. To run the last 5 km in 14:05 is great for me and promising for this year.” The splits were 15:04 at 5 km, 29:40 at 10 km and 43:54 at 15 km. Top 9 went under 1:02. Also in women race a Kenyan win for Caroline Rotich 1:09:09 over Diane Nukuri-Johnson who represents Burundi 1:09:12 personal best and Croatian Lisa Stublic 1:09:18 national record. Fourth German Sabrina Mockenhaupt 1:09:42 and fifth Ukrainian Lyudmila Kovalenko 1:09:43 PB. Yolanda Caballero of Colombia, the early contender, finished seventh in a South American record of 1:10:30, while Stephanie Rothstein Bruce placed ninth as the top American. Her 1:10:54 performance registers as a new personal best as well. European indoor champion Sara Moreira of Portugal was 10th in 1:11:03, American Olympian Janet Bawcom was twelfth in 1:11:13. German men and Russian women along with Russian U23 men and Ukrainian U23 women were the best in countries rankings. Organizers were happy with home Borja Vivas who won shot put with 20.00 ahead of Bulgarian Georgi Ivanov 19.68 and Andriy Semenov of Ukraine 19.55. Olympic winner Krisztian Pars topped the hammer 77.24 over Pavel Kryvitski of Belarus 75.89, Poland´s Pawel Fajdek 75.52 and German Markus Esser 74.71. World junior record holder Zigismunds Sirmais of Latvia won men javelin 82.51 over German Thomas Rohler 81.87 and Estonian Risto Matas 79.10. German Daniel Jasinski was surprise discus winner with personal best 64.69 just 3 cm over the legendary Virgilijus Alekna 64.66 at age of 41, Dutch Erik Cadee 64.38 and Turkish record holder Ercument Olgundeniz 64.00. Discus was the top male event in regard to the depth of results. Even more quality in women events. Olympic medalist Yevgeniya Kolodko won the shot put 19.04 over Belarus Alena Kopets 18.18 outdoor PB and Russian Irina Tarasova 17.98. In discus world medalist from Daegu Nadine Muller achieved world leading 66.69. Distant second French record holder Melina Robert-Michon 61.26, third Serbian Dragana Tomasevic 61.12. Another world lead and the best result overall, also a meet record the 69.34 by World Champion Mariya Abakumova in javelin. It is her third best mark of the career. European champion 2012 Vira Rebryk was second 63.42 ahead of European Champion 2010 Linda Stahl 61.97. Biggest surprise in women hammer as Moldova´s record holder Zalina Marghieva won with 71.98 over Olympic gold medalist Tatyana Lysenko 71.54, German Kathrin Klaas 71.07 and Tracey Andersson with Swedish record 70.82. In the U23 categories the best result by Russian javelin thrower Valeriy Iordan 82.89 what is new meet record and also overall best result in javelin. Other male winners were Daniel Stahl of Sweden 18.63 in the shot put, Montenegro record holder Danijel Furtula 62.10 in discus and French Quentin Bigot 71.79 in hammer. On the women side German world junior champion Shanice Craft won the discus with good 60.14, Turkish record holder Emel Dereli only at age of 17 topped the U23 shot put with 16.78, other winners French Alexandra Tavernier 66.20 in hammer and Ukrainian Hanna Habina 58.58 in javelin.
Chinese wins
LUGANO (SUI, Mar 17): 11th Memorial Mario Albisetti, Lugano Trophy first race of EA Walking Circuit registered Chinese wins. London Olympic bronze medalist Wang Zhen achieved 1:19:08. He repeated his win from here in 2011. Second Ukrainian Ruslan Dmytrenko 1:20:38 and third French Kevin Campion with big improvement to 1:21:02. Top ten went under 1:22 which confirms great depth of the men 20 km. Fourth another Ukrainian Nazar Kovalenko 1:21:10 ahead of Mexican Antonio Palma 1:21:13 PB and Lukasz Nowak of Poland with 1:21:17 (missed his PB by 5 seconds). Irish record holder Robert Heffernan was 10th in 1:21:59. Olympic medalist Erick Barrondo of Guatemala was disqualified. World medalist and Asian record holder Liu Hong was the top woman in 1:27:06. It was new event record, the previous was 1:28:03 by Russian Tatyana Sibileva from last year. Liu Hong won here already in 2011 and it was in total third Chinese women win in Lugano. Second as last year Mirna Ortiz of Guatemala in unbelievable 1:28:54 what is the same time as last year also second here. She equaled so her own South American record. Third Russian Lina Bikulowa with personal best 1:28:58 and fourth Katarzyna Kwoka with new Polish record 1:29:21. Fifth another Poland´s walker Paulina Buziak 1:30:15 (she lost the Polish record 1:29:44 in 2012). Italian Beijing Olympic medalist Elisa Rigaudo was 6th 1:30:49 and 7th young Czech Anezka Drahotova who at age of 17 in the debut at the distance improved to excellent 1:30:54 new junior national best and second best Czech ever. Last under 1:32 was experienced Lithuanian Brigita Virbalyte as 8th in 1:31:47. Junior winners Briton Jamie Higgins 43:30 and Russian Nadezhda Leontyeva 45:14, U17 results were topped by Slovak Michal Morvay 44:54 and Italian Lidia Bardella 52:24 at the 10 km.

PERTH (AUS, Mar 16): 2009 World Champion Dani Samuels achieved another IAAF World Championships A-Qualifier to win the women’s discus at the Go for 2&5 Perth Track Classic with 62.72. Liam Zamel-Paez, who has missed much of the last two Australian seasons as a consequence of injury, soared a new personal best of 229 to win the men’s high jump and record his first B qualifier. Returning to the thrower’s runway after a monster 62.53m best effort at the Sydney Track Classic, Kim Mickle as a Western Australian was a local draw card with 60.11. Continental pole vault record holder Alana Boyd cleared 450 to win ahead of junior Liz Parnov 440. In a disappointing result, Olympic silver medallist Mitchell Watt was forced to withdraw from the men’s long jump after experiencing cramp as he ran in to jump. This left the British record holder and Olympic champion Greg Rutherford to battle it out with Commonwealth Games medallist Ignisious Gaisah of Ghana across the six-jump series, with Rutherford soaring 789 (0.0) to defeat Gaisah (776, 0.0). On track, 2011 IAAF World Championship representative Anneliese Rubie edged closer to the women’s 400m qualifying mark for the IAAF World Championships when she crossed in 52.89 PB to win. Entertaining the more than 4000 strong crowd for most of the main program, British record holder Steve Lewis (560) won the battle in the men’s pole vault, with former world champion Brad Walker (550) and 2008 Olympic champion Steve Hooker (535) third. Australian 100m and 200m champion Josh ‘the Boss’ Ross won the men’s 200m in a time of 20.97 (-1.1), while international charge Calesio Newman from USA took line honours in the men’s 100m in 10.37 (-1.2). Olympic semi-finalist Lauren Boden and 2011 American champion Jeshua Anderson won the women’s and men’s 400m hurdles in 57.12 and 49.93 respectively. Sudanese Yousif Rabah won the men 400 m in 46.31.
Silva 481 NR, Perez 66.01
HAVANA (CUB, Mar 16): Olympic medalist Yarisley Silva cleared a CAC record of 481 in her first attempt, after clearing 450 in the second and 461 in the first during first day of Cuban Championships. She failed then at 490. Daylis Caballero was a distant second with 430. “Despite being a bit tired from the indoor season, I wanted to compete in front of my home crowd. It was not my best day so this result came as a surprise. But I have been training for this for a long time, ” said Silva, who looks forward to her first Diamond League meet in New York on May 25. 2010 World Junior champion Yaimé Pérez threw a massive PB of 66.01 m in women discus ahead of World and Olympic medallist Yarelis Barrios 65.17 and Denia Caballero 63.40. Ernesto Reve produced a huge personal best of 17.46 to win the triple jump. Ignacio Morales clocked 13.54 to win men 110 m hurdles. Fourth from last year World Juniors Lismania Munoz improved to 59.29 to win women javelin. The final of men 100 m was unfortunately hand-timed with 10.0 for Yaniel Carrero who will be a junior also in 2014. Other winners were Jorge Fernández in the discus (62.12), Daysiurami Bonne (53.18) and Orestes RodrÃguez (46.87) in the 400 m.
D. Williams 10.28 and 20.27
KINGSTON (JAM, Mar 15-16): Delano Williams confirmed his top talent when winning both sprints at Jamaican Schools Championships with top times and national senior records for Turks and Caicos. He no longer belongs to junior category (born in 1993). Still impressive 10.28 (-0.7) at the 100 m and mainly 20.27 (+0.9) in the 200 m. Here Usain Bolt has the meet record 20.25 from 2003. Top Jamaicans behind him Senoj Givans 10.45 and Odail Todd 20.78. From Jamaican point of view, two top talents. On the boys side hurdler Omar McLeod who got two national junior records, at 110 m hurdles (99) 13.24 (+0.5, this is also CAC junior record and fourth fastest ever time) and 400 m hurdles 49.94. In girls section sprinter Shericka Jackson with 22.98 (-0.1) and 51.60 in the 400 m. In the junior boys 400 m the winner Javon Francis solid 46.21. In the youth section the top personality was Michael O´Hara (born in 1997) winning the 100 m in 10.56 (-1.3), the 200 m in 20.63 (+3.2) and 110 m hurdles (91) in 13.45 (-1.1). Youth 400 m winner Devaughn Baker clocked 46.64 meet record. Holmwood Technical High came from well behind to clip defending champions Edwin Allen High for the girls’ title, while Calabar High easily retained the boys’ crown.

POTCHEFSTROOM (RSA, Mar 16): Former world champion Tero Pitkamäki during his training camp in South Africa achieved world leading 86.40 in javelin in third round of regional championships meet. It is great start of the season for him, for example in the whole 2012 he had only two better results.
SAO PAULO (BRA, Mar 16): World finalist Bruno Barros clocked 20.58 (-0.5) at another open meet here. Marathon runner Marilson Gomes dos Santos won the 5000 m in 13:47.22. Jonathan Henrique leaped to 16.78 (+0.4) in the triple.
MONTERREY (MEX, Mar 16): Luis Rivera leaped to 793 (0.0) at the meet here. Pablo Solares won the 1500 m in 3:40.50.
POINTE A PIERRE (TRI, Mar 16): St. Kitts Antoine Adams won the 100 m at the Southern Games in 10.62 (+1.2) and Jamaican Patricia Hall the 400 m in 53.74. In men 400 m Jamaican Oral Thompson in 48.04 beat home star hurdler Jehue Gordon 48.24.
REGENSBURG (GER, Mar 16): At Regional 10 000 m track championships Corinna Harrer achieved new personal best 32:30.41. She did it only two weeks after her silver medal at European Indoor Championships.
NAIROBI (KEN, Mar 16): Former world junior 800 m champion Winnie Chebet won the 800 m in good 2:04.6 taking the conditions into consideration. Sheila Chesang produced a solid run to win the 1500 m race in 4:31.4. Little-known Johnstone Simotwo carried the 3000 m title in 8:05.4. Vincent Kosgei who won the 400 m hurdles on Friday was in 46.5 beaten by Boniface Mweresa 46.0. World Youth 400m bronze medalist Alphas Kishoyan (47.1) and Olympics 800 m semi-finalist Antony Chemut (47.5) followed. East and Central Africa 800m secondary schools champion Nathan Biwott wore the two-lap race crown in 1:47.2 ahead of Fredrick Korir (1:47.5) and Isaac Rono (1:47.8). Geoffrey Kiprono Koech of police won the 1500 m in 3:44.0. Tom Musinde was unbeaten in the 100 m (10.3) while Ibrahim Muya crossed the line first in the 200m in 21.1. Informs East Standard.
ADDIS ABABA (ETH, Mar 17): Senbere Teferi won girls 3000 m in 9:12.95 at the Ethiopian Junior Championships. The Championships will help select Ethiopia’s teams for the IAAF World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine, and the African Junior Championships in Pretoria, South Africa later in the year. Zewdu Mola won boys steeple in 8:49.20. Also to note Chalachew Shimels 3:42.23 in the 1500 m, Abrha Hanle 14:15.87 in the 5000 m and Assefa Bitew 29:30.35 in the 10 000 m. FORTH WORTH: At TCU Invitational fast but windy sprints. In the men 100 m Clayton Vaughn posted 10.13 (+4.3) in the 100 m, in other race former NCAA Champion Maurice Mitchell 10.31 (+2.8). In the 200 m Jamil Hubbard 20.54 (+6.9), in women 100 m Porscha Lucas 11.16 (+4.4). In women long jump Tori Polk 666 (+2.3) over Chelsea Hayes 659 (legal +1.8) and Whitney Gipson 646 (+3.0).
TAMPA: Relay olympic winner Michael Mathieu of Bahamas was fast at Bulls Invitational with 10.23 (+4.5) and 20.61 (+2.1) in both sprints.
SAN DIEGO: Canadian junior Nicole Oudenaarden scored impressive North American junior record 5716 in heptathlon at Aztec Invitational.
CORAL GABLES: World Champs 2009 participant Johnny Dutch scored a nice double at the Hurricane Invitational with 13.51 (+1.4) over the hurdles and 46.75 in the 400 m. In the hurdles he beat solid names Antwon Hicks 13.63 and Devon Hill 13.69. Kierra Beckles of Barbados clocked 13.11 (+1.1) in women hurdles.
TUCSON: Croatian sprint champion Dario Horvat improved at Willie Williams Classic to 10.32 (0.0) in the 100 m. Trinidad´s Jarrin Solomon topped the 400 m 45.93 and Canadian record holder Sultana Frizell opened in hammer with 70.41 m.
CHARLOTTE: Olympic relay medalist with broken leg Manteo Mitchell clocked 20.65 (+3.7) at the 49er Classic meet in the 200 m. Ifrish Alberg of Surinam posted national 100 m record 10.31 (+1.4).
TEMPE: Trinidad´s record holder Wayne Davis went over the hurdles at Baldy Castillo Invitational in 13.54 (+0.1). Fast sprinters from NCAA Indoor Champs Prezel Hardy won the 100 m in 10.40 (-0.8) and the 200 m in 20.81 (0.0). Second in shorter dash 200 m world indoor leader Ameer Webb 10.48. In the 4×100 m they posted with other colleagues from Texas AM second fastest in the world 38.76 (Webb, Bailey, Bryan, Hardy). Indian Vikas Gowda tossed the discus to 62.43 and Sam Humphreys got his second best ever javelin result 81.40. On the women side Ashton Purvis clocked 11.35 (+0.3) in the 100 m and Kamaria Brown 22.85 (+1.1) in the 200 m. Texas AM women achieved world leading 43.31.
ATHENS: Former world champion Reese Hoffa got 20.75 in shot put opener at Georgia Relays. Second Jamaican Ashinia Miller 19.05 personal best. Impressive shape also for St. Lucia record holder Levern Spencer in women high jump with 193 clearance what is outdoor world leader. Jonathan Smith clocked windy 10.20 (+2.3) in the 100 m.
WINSTON SALEM: Olympic relay winner Francena McCorory was timed with 52.26 in the 400 m at the Wake Forest Open meet in her outdoor opener.
SAN LUIS OBISPO: Cal Poly Invitational saw the openers of 2013 for World record holder in decathlon Ashton Eaton. He won the hurdles in 13.76 (+2.4) and javelin with great personal best 66.64 m. It was an improvement from 61.96 at London Games.
RUSTON: Jim Mize Invitational meet registered second best ever for Jamaican discus thrower Jason Morgan 65.94 m. Dennis Richardson improved at the 100 m to 10.32 (+0.3) and junior Hanoj Carter posted 20.62 (+4.1) in the 200 m.
EUGENE: Oregon Preview meet saw NCAA indoor medalist at 60 m English Gardner winning the 400 m in 54.31. Bridget Franek posted 6:19.09 in 2000 m steeple and Hassan Mead outdoor PB 7:58.43 in the 3000 m. DeAnthony Thomas clocked windy 10.31 (+2.1) in the 100 m.
HOUSTON: Talented son of former world record holder Cameron Burrell got in High School section of 62nd Texas Souther Relays 10.25 (+2.8) in the 100 m. In University section Jeff Henderson got 10.20 but aided by +4.5. Beijing olympic finalist in long jump Funmi Jimoh got 643 (+1.1).
AMARILLO: Jamaican Omar Johnson clocked here at Springbreak Classic meet wind assisted 20.48 (+2.6) in the 200 m.
OTHER ROAD AND CC RESULTS
TAIPEI (TPE, Mar 17): Kenyan runners won the men and women’s divisions of the Taipei Expressway Marathon on Sunday, with Joel Kiplimo Kemboi successfully defending his title for the third consecutive year in 2:20:02. Top woman Kenyan Mercy Jelimo in 2:42:06. A total of 12 274 runners from 20 countries registered for the race.
MATSUE (JPN, Mar 17): 2010 Matsue Ladies Half Marathon winner Kenyan Doricah Obare returned to the top winning the 2013 edition of the race in 1:11:11. Doubling as the National University Women’s Half Marathon Championships and the selection race for the Japanese women’s half marathon squad for this summer’s World University Games, Obare was up against an almost entire collegiate field and saw tough competition from Yasuka Ueno, who challenged for the win before falling back and taking 2nd in 1:11:30. YAMAGUCHI (JPN, Mar 17): Course record holder Yukiko Akaba ran 1:08:59 to claim her second National Corporate Half Marathon Championships victory. With the first sub-1:09 by a Japanese woman since her 1:08:11 course record in 2008 Akaba outran ekiden star Hanae Tanaka who made a solid debut in 1:09:18. Third Rei Ohara 1:09:45. Riko Matsuzaki won the women’s 10 km in 32:48 by a margin of 7 seconds. In the men’s race 22-year-old Fumihiro Maruyama won in a PB 1:01:15, outrunning Kenyans Johana Maina 1:01:28 and Gideon Ngatuny 1:01:43. From Brett Larner.
APATIN (SRB, Mar 16): Bahraini runners dominated the 55th World Military CC Championships in Serbia. More than 300 runners from 24 countries competed. Alemu Bekele won the 4.8 km short course in 15:11 and Regasa Zelalem the 11.5 km long course in 35:22. Poland was the top team in short and Bahrain in long course. The only European on the podium was Blazej Brzezinski from Poland as third in the 4.8 km race.
LAREDO (ESP, Mar 16): Versatile runner and recent European indoor medalist Juan Carlos Higuero won the Laredo 10 km on the road with 29:14. In women race Iris Fuentes-Pila clocked 32:57.
BILBAO (ESP, Mar 16): In the 8th edition of the road mile wins here for Isabel Macias (5:02) and El Hassan Oubaddi of Morocco 4:32 ahead of Kevin Lopez 4:35 and Ivan Fernandez 4:36.
KERZERS (SUI, Mar 16): Kenyan wins at 35th Kerzers 15 km road race. Edwin Kiptoo 43:48 ahead of David Kogei 44:15 and Daniel Wanjiru 44:20. In women Tabitha Wambui 51:06 over Jane Muia 51:12 and Sang Chelagat 51.27. Best Swiss Ursula Spielmann-Jetziner as 7th in 53:35. In total 8571 participants.
WELS (AUT, Mar 17): Austrian Half Marathon Champions are top home marathon runners Gunther Weidlinger 1:03:40 and Andrea Mayr 1:15:10. In overall ranking they were both second, wins for Kenyans Joel Mwangi 1:03:22 and Mary Wangari 1:13:06.
MONTIJO (POR, Mar 16): Claudio Villanueva won the Spanish 50 km walking title in 3:55:13 personal best. The race was held in Portugal, second Mikel Odriozola 4:00:05, best home walker and national champion was Luis Gil as overall third 4:12:31.
