MANCHESTER (GBR, May 20): Haile Gebrselassie showed with a fifth victory and achieved in a pulsating 2012 World leading time of 27:39 that despite setbacks in his marathon career he is still the master craftsman ahead of his young pretenders over 10 kilometres. Informs David Martin.
Gebrselassie’s dominant run where he passed through the half distance in 13:31 saw his second split of 14:08 lower the world lead fellow countryman Kenenisa Bekele posted when winning last month’s SPAR Great Ireland Run in Dublin with a time of 27:47. “That wasn’t really on my mind but yes, it is nice that it happened,” said Gebrselassie with his usual beaming big smile after his fourth consecutive Mancunian win after having picked up the first of the five in 2005 in what was then a UK All-Comers’ record of 27:25.

Superb discus improvement and new Brazilian discus record for Ronald Juliao 65.41 over Cuban Jorge Fernandez 63.89. Laila Ferrer improved in women javelin to 60.21. Geisa Coutinho won the 400 m in 51.79, in men´s race Anderson Henriques 46.12 with US hurdler Kerron Clement third in 46.53. Mozambique´s Kurt Couto was the best in the 400 m hurdles in 49.71 over Andres Silva of Uruguay 49.78. Kenyan Anthony Chemut achieved solid 1:45.27 in the 800 m ahead of Brazilian Diego Martins 1:45.62. In remaining events Alexis Copello of Cuba won the triple jump 17.17 (+0.2), US Nichole Denby the 100 m hurdles 13.24 (-0.1), Jamaican Richard Phillips 13.63 (-0.2) at 110 m hurdles. In relays fast times for Brazilian teams 43.01, 38.63 (over All-Stars 38.87 Lee, Burns, Callender, Phiri) and 3:31.79. Only in men 4×400 m Venezuela got 3:01.88 over Cuba 3:02.21.

Belarus Sergey Kolomoets was second with 75.77. In women event US win for Jessica Cosby 71.80. Second Moldova´s Marina Marghieva 71.34 and third South American record holder Jennifer Dahlgren 70.45.

US Calesio Newman won both men sprints in two personal bests 10.07 (+0.4) and 20.31 (+0.6). Fast women 200 m by Porscha Lucas 22.65 (+0.9). 400 m winners Natasha Hastings 51.71 and Bahamian Ramon Miller 45.78. Jamaican Roxroy Cato got personal best 49.03 at the 400 m hurdles. Hurdles were wind assisted. US Ronnie Ash 13.26 (+2.6) and Nikita Holder of Canada 12.74 (+3.4). Impressive senior national record and junior area record Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad in javelin 78.94.

THESSALONÃKI (GRE, May 19): PeriklÃs Iakovákis made his season début in the 400m hurdles, clocking a satisfying 49.93 in the ‘NÃkos Zahariádis Memorial’ meet. The most impressive performance of the evening was credited to long jumper Yeóryios Tsákonas, who improved his pb with a massive 8.14 (+1.9). Both athletes achieved Helsinki standards and now set their goals in reaching Olympic qualifying marks. Running against the wind, KonstadÃnos DouvalÃdis won the 110m hurdles with 13.68, shortly after setting a new pb in the 100m (10.55), while in the throws, Yeóryios Trémos and Yervásios FilippÃdis opened the season with 59.62 and 79.82, in the discus and the javelin respectively.
LEFKOSIA (CYP, May 19): Greek javelin thrower SpirÃdon Lebésis showed early form in his first competition of the season, and while still in training stage, he registered an Olympic A-standard and new personal best with 83.02, during the ‘Matsia’ Spring Championships.

DOURO (POR, May 20): Sara Moreira won for third time the Douro Vinhateiro half maraton in 1:10:55 ahead of Monica Silva 1:14:47. Rui Pedro Silva was the top male runner in 1:05:14.
