I am back in the States, after the trip back from Hengelo to Chicago, then a two hour bus ride to Madison. My trip to Rome and Hengelo gave me a first hand look at the major early season meetings and I was left with how many great things we have done right in our sport. There are many challenges, but there are opportunities to grow this sport even more than I imagined.
Maryam Jamal ran a brilliant 1,500 meters in Hengelo, to take the second world lead she had set in four days, with her 4:00.31. Dayron Robles showed that he is a force to be reckoned with in 2011, with his world leading 13.07.

Now, off to the PRe Distance Gala and the Pre Classic, two sessions of great track and field in Eugene, Oregon!

2 WORLD LEADS

HENGELO (NED, May 29): Two world leading marks highlighted
the the FBK Games in Hengelo (IAAF World Challenge) before the packed stadium.
Maryam Jamal won the 1500 m in 4:00.03 and Dayron Robles clockes 13.07 at the
high hurdles. Surprise win by Mohammed
Shahween from Saoudi Arabia clocking 3:31.82 over Haron Keitany
(3:31.82). The women’s 5000m went to Meseret Defar (14:45.48) while the men’s
5000m saw Kenyans Edwin Soi (12:59.15), Vincent Chepkok (12:59.28) and Jacob
Cheshari (13:01.03) take the top places. Danielle Carruthers impressed with
12.64 in the women’s hurdles (meet record) over Kellie Wells (12.65). Kim
Collins managed a surprising win in the 100m with 10.05, over Dutch Martina
Churandy (10.10, standard for London 2012) and Mario Forsythe (10.11), Jamaican
Chillonie Calvert was victorious in the women’s race with 11.05 personal best.
Adam Kszczot (1.45.11) got the win over Kenya’s Boaz Lalang (1:45.31) in the
men’s 800m and Dayron Robles showed he is in excellent shape with a world
leading and meet record 13.07 victory over Dwight Thomas (13.18) and Terrence
Trammell (13.31). Irving Saladino managed to win the long jump battle but his
838 was too windy (+3.1) with Ignisious Gaisah (826) and Greg Rutherford (818)
also performing strongly. Robert Harting (68.23) got the victory over Erik
Cadee (66.16) in the discus throw. Jenny Meadows confirmed her status with
1:59.76 over 800m. Meseret Defar recorded 35th (the number include indoor
performances) sub-15 minutes 5000m of her career, one more than Tirunesh
Dibaba.
