This is chapter 3 in the 50th NYC Marathon Rewind. The story is about the late Norb Sander, an early star runner at the NYRR, winner of NYC Marathon, and also the man behind the NYC Armory. Once, in an article on the NB Armory, I called it, “the house that Norb built.”
Norb Sander died in his sleep on March 17, 2017. His celebration of life took place on March 21, 2017. I flew back from the West coast to pay my respects. It was a day of reflection and appreciation.
Norb Sander left his lovely wife and lovely family, plus a legacy at the NB Armory. The ressurected Armory is the sanctuary of sport for 150,000 plus junior high, high school, college and open athletes each year, competing in 60-80 events (in non pandemic years).
