Matt Centrowitz is the first American to win the Olympic 1,500 meters since 1908. Matthew won the race by controlling it for each step and unleashing a blistering last 400 meters to cement the victory. When I spoke with Matt on January 28, after his win over the mile in Boston, he was relaxed, full of good humor, and obviously, enjoying his stature in the sport.

On Saturday night, Matt Centrowitz will be racing the Paavo Nurmi 2 mile against one of the finest fields assembled in many years. Canada’s Mo Ahmed, Garrett Heath, Ben True, World Indoor silver medalist Ryan Hill, Scotland’s Andrew Butchart will all be battling Mr. Centrowitz.

Question: Have you been able to come to terms being the Olympic 1500m champion?

Matthew: Sometimes when I wake up it still hasn’t hit me or during different times during different weeks I’ll just wake up and say it to myself out loud and make sure it’s real. Having spent so much time and so many years striving for Olympic gold, when it actually happens your life-long dream has been accomplished. You kind of realize: A) did that happen? And B) where do you go from there? It’s definitely been surreal. I think having an indoor season and following this up shortly after Olympics allows me to move on pretty quick. You take this year as I was taking last year and move on.
